We are recruiting an archaeologist with extensive archaeological and cultural resources expertise to serve as an ODOT statewide archaeological compliance expert. In this key role, you will assist with transportation project delivery statewide as ODOT's archaeological liaison in the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).

*         This is a limited duration appointment that is scheduled to last until 01/01/2021, though the duration can change at any time due to business needs. Duties & Responsibilities
*         Serve as a technical leader responsible for ensuring that our actions comply with federal and state archaeological resource laws, specifically related to SHPO archaeological requirements.
*         Support transportation and maintenance projects.
*         Review and respond to Section 106, ORD 390, and ORS 358 documentation.
*         Ensure ODOT's actions comply with federal and state cultural resources requirements.
*         Prepare correspondence, draft letters of concurrence, and assess if adequate information has been supplied to complete SHPO consultation.
*         Document SHPO's acknowledgement of ODOT's compliance with federal and state cultural resources laws.
*         Review and comment on environmental impact statements, environmental assessments, and permit applications.
*         Participate in project field visits and project meetings.
*         Serve as a statewide expert for federal and state cultural resources compliance where transportation activities affect cultural resources.
*         Provide technical advice and guidance.
*         Participate in process improvement efforts.
*         Provide outreach, training, and education within ODOT and SHPO.
*         Review clearance documents, permits and findings.
*         Assist in developing memorandums of agreement and programmatic agreements for projects.
*         Establish and maintain communication for the section with internal and external stakeholders.
Qualifications, Required & Requested Skills

Minimum Qualifications:
A graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology or a closely related field; AND
*         At least three (3) years of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration or management;
*         At least twelve (12) months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology; AND
*         Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.

Special Qualifications:
Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).

Desired Attributes/Application Scoring Criteria: In addition to your related work experience and education, we will use the attributes below to determine whom to interview. *         At least twelve (12) months of supervised field and analytic experience in both prehistoric and historic archaeology, experience and knowledge working with federal and state of Oregon laws pertaining to cultural resources management. Preference will be given to those individuals with experience in Oregon archaeology and transportation projects.
*         Ability to work with a team, offer solution oriented advice, and maintain exceptional communication skills.
*         Experience in prioritizing high workload volumes.
*         Experience working with the agencies, tribes, and local governments; including experience negotiating minimization measures and mitigation as it relates to archaeology.
*         Experience writing, reviewing, and commenting on cultural resource technical reports to ensure agency compliance.

Working Conditions:
*         Work is primarily performed in a typical office environment using a computer.
*         Work schedule is Monday through Friday, with occasionally required overtime.
*         Occasional travel to project and/or meeting sites is required.
*         Field trips to project sites are statewide and may involve exposure to traffic, construction equipment, and inclement weather.
*         This type of work requires the ability to focus, manage multiple priorities with frequent interruptions and negotiate solutions.

*         Describe your experience working with prehistoric and historical archaeology. In addition, please note any work related to transportation projects and how you addressed cultural resources evaluation methods and any experience you might have negotiating minimization measures and mitigation.
*         Describe your experience in and approach to prioritizing high work load volumes. What methods did you employ to successfully complete your tasks?
