Please join us for our May First Thursday event - Thursday May 2, 4pm, in Cramer 41.

Molly Casperson (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) will be speaking about her study of past subsistence in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska (see abstract below).

Invite your students and other interested colleagues. Thanks and see you there!

Abstract: The Norton Stage (2500-1000 cal B.P.) of Southwest Alaska is typically characterized as a caribou hunting and fishing culture. To directly document Norton subsistence practices, Casperson analyzed a sizeable faunal assemblage from Summit Island, a nearshore island of northwest Bristol Bay. Analysis of 9,981 mammal and bird bone specimens documented an intensive marine-focused subsistence economy; over 2,000 years, generations of Norton peoples harvested seals, walruses, murres, cormorants, and eiders from the Walrus Island chain.
