Hello Coalition Members,

I hope you’ve had a great beginning to the New Year!!

It has been a while since our last update, but rest assured… we have been busy on our Mission which is to “promote prevention and control of vaccine-preventable diseases in adults living in Oregon and Southwest Washington”.

In this update:
§ 2008 Diabetes Expo -- outreach and vaccination clinic
§ Joint Lifespan meeting with OPIC
§ OAIC Mini Grants – our six awardees and their projects
§ Shah Malik recognized by APhA
§ Calendar of OAIC Steering Committee Meetings

2008 Diabetes EXPO
This will be our second year exhibiting at the Portland Convention Center for the annual Diabetes EXPO. Last year we were able to do outreach to the public and answered many questions about which vaccinations persons with Diabetes should get. Last year we were able to provide PPV-23 (pneumococcal pneumonia) and influenza (both adult and pediatric) and gave more than 150 doses.

This year, we are partnering with the Oregon Diabetes Coalition to provide even more outreach and are excited to be offering Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis), PPV-23, and influenza vaccinations at no charge to eligible persons.

The clinic will run from 9am to 4pm on February 23rd. We welcome volunteers interested in staffing the outreach booth, helping with paperwork, or doing vaccinations. We will have a pharmacy preceptor so pharmacy students can immunize. We also welcome currently licensed RPhs, RNs, NPs, NDs, MDs, DOs, and PAs. Nursing students are also welcome but to vaccinate they must have a professor from their college present.

If you are interested, please contact me by phone, email, or the contact tool on our website to find a schedule that works for you. Attendance at the EXPO is free. This is a great event with many fun activities and great exhibits. Last year over 4,000 attended.

Joint Lifespan Meeting March 13, 2008 11:45-4:45
We are working with the Oregon Partnership to Immunize Children (OPIC) to put on our second educational Lifespan Immunization community meeting. This year we are bringing in a national expert on vaccine finance to discuss ongoing reform of how vaccines are reimbursed and purchased. The National Vaccine Advisory Committee has an active workgroup dedicated to better understanding and addressing the challenges of vaccine finance, their efforts will be highlighted here. After the main presentation, three breakouts will be offered.
Breakout #1: A policy-level discussion of Oregon vaccine financing and reimbursement issues led by a State expert, including Oregon’s Vaccine Financing Initiative and opportunities for participation and advocacy.
Breakout #2: Training on the basics of Social Marketing and Health Message Design, including where to find resources and important aspects of creating your own outreach materials such as health literacy and cultural competency.
Breakout #3: An engaging workshop for immunizers including info such as site location, needle length, storage and handling issues, and a chance to ask experts your administration questions. Great for new vaccinators or as a refresher to current providers of childhood and adult immunizations.

We are still working out the venue, but will be sending out save-the-dates and invitations very soon.

OAIC Mini Grants
The Oregon Adult Immunization Coalition was excited to offer our pilot mini-grant project in 2007. These mini-grants were designed to support or enhance adult immunizations throughout Oregon and SW Washington. Sixteen submissions were reviewed by our selection committee and a total of $7,000 was awarded to a variety of innovative projects (maximum grant of $2,500). Congratulations to the awardees, and thank you to all of our applicants. We saw many excellent ideas and tried to choose those that most closely reflected our Mission and Vision Statements. Our evaluation is ongoing, but we hope to offer mini-grants again this year.

2007 OAIC Adult Immunization Mini Grant selectees:
§ The Rhinehart Clinic – Wheeler, Oregon

Coalition Partner Awarded
Shah Malik, Pharmacy Care Manager at Safeway and long-time OAIC supporter has been given some well deserved national attention for his dedication and hard work. Shah was nominated by his peers for the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management Distinguished Achievement Awards. Please join us in congratulating Shah for his dedication and the huge impact he has made. The award centered around Shah’s training and support of over 800 immunizing pharmacists and his many collaborative projects with colleagues and community groups.
