The Oregon HIA Program is pleased to announce a new local health capacity-building project: HIA in a Day Workshops. Health Impact Assessment (HIA), is a framework for determining how a decision on a policy, project, or project could impact public health. Using the best available evidence, including research, local expertise, and public health data, HIAs present both findings and recommendations for improving health outcomes from decisions in transportation, land use planning, education, and other arenas, for everyone in the community. At the spring 2016 workshops, county and tribal health department staff and their colleagues in land use and transportation planning will receive a training on Health Impact Assessment, learn about the connections between transportation and local health concerns, and do a rapid assessment of a local transportation decision. Participants will leave the training with a grounding in the environmental determinants of health, an understanding of local health and planning issues, the ability to participate in an HIA, and new tools and resources for understanding how transportation and health intersect. Planners who participate in the full day training will be eligible for AICP professional credits through our Workshop co-sponsor, the Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association. After the workshop, the Oregon HIA Program will work with the health department to develop a report detailing the workshop findings for participants and other stakeholders. Upon completion of the report, the local health jurisdictions will receive $5,000 to cover workshop-related costs. The Oregon HIA Program will hold 2 HIA in a Day trainings in spring 2016. County and Tribal health authorities interested in hosting an HIA In a Day Workshop should send a letter of interest to me by 5pm on January 22. The letter of interest should briefly outline your previous experience(s) with local transportation decisions, your top three health concerns listed in your local health improvement plan, and at least three local transportation and/or land use professionals you would invite to participate in the workshop. The letter should also briefly describe an upcoming transportation decision you would like to cover during the Workshop, including who is making the decision and when the decision is expected to be made. Letters of interest should not exceed 3 pages. The Oregon HIA Program will announce workshop locations in early February. Selections will be made based on several criteria, including current HIA capacity, the potential of the upcoming transportation decision to impact local health concerns, and the potential to develop new relationships with local land use and transportation professionals. These trainings are made possible with funding from the Healthy Community Design Initiative at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Please let me know if you have any questions.
