The Impact of Health Care Reform on Services and Supports for Young
Adults with Serious Mental Health Conditions
By 2014, approximately 80% of young adults who would otherwise be
uninsured will have gained health insurance under the Affordable Care
Act (ACA, also known as health care reform or "Obamacare"). What does
this mean for young adults with serious mental health conditions? This
publication answers frequently asked questions, and urges stakeholders
to get involved now to influence important decisions that will determine
what sorts of services and supports will be made available under the
ACA.

New issue of Focal Point: "Healthy Relationships"
The latest issue of Focal Point is about Healthy Relationships and
their effects on young adults with mental health conditions. While most
of the articles focus on the positive aspects of relationships, others

New College Program Helps Students Recover from Substance Use
Disorders
The Los Angeles Times reports on a new program called the Collegiate
Recovery Communities that promotes recovery from substance abuse.
Preliminary data show that after six months, students in the program
reported feeling better supported in their recovery and more optimistic
about their lives.

Online Support for Youth Who Self-Injure
Because many youth who self-injure first turn to the internet for help,
researchers from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada are looking
at how the internet can be used as a tool to reach out to adolescents
experiencing depression and non-suicidal self-injury.

Social Support Improves Well-Being of Those Who Come Out
The Los Angeles Times reports that a new study has found that students
who had come out as lesbian, gay, or bisexual were less angry and
depressed and had higher self-esteem, but only if they were in
supportive environments.

NAMI Program for Family Members Shown to be Effective
A recent study published in Psychiatric Services found that the
National Alliance on Mental Illness* (NAMI) Family-to-Family education
program, a free 12-week self-help course, has shown positive outcomes
for family members of individuals living with mental illness.

In 2010 the National Runaway Switchboard (NRS) conducted interviews
with 50 youth who had ran away from their foster homes to learn why
youth run away and what can be done to prevent running away.
