Marine Board Approves Rulemaking Process for Holgate Channel, Other Items

The Oregon State Marine Board accepted a petition to open the rulemaking process for a no-wake-zone in the Holgate Channel between Ross Island and the east bank of the Willamette River, and a motor ban in the Ross Island Lagoon. The petition was submitted by Willamette Riverkeeper, the Urban Green Spaces Institute and the Portland Audubon Society.

The next step in the rulemaking process is a public comment period with a formal hearing on the proposed rule, which will be scheduled in mid to late May. People who would like to be notified of the hearing date directly are encouraged to send the Marine Board an email to marine.board at state.or.us.

The Board also approved a rule modification that creates a 5 mph slow-no-wake zone within 100 feet of the Salem Waterfront transient dock. A temporary rule was in effect for the 2008 boating season, which law enforcement found to be effective in improving safety and reducing conflict near the dock.
