Clackamas County Marine Patrol Receives Top Honors

                The Oregon State Marine Board recognized the outstanding efforts of the Clackamas County Marine Patrol Program during their annual Marine Law Enforcement Conference held in Bend, on October 16.
                The Clackamas County Marine Patrol Unit was recognized with the "Program of the Year Award" for their patrol efforts and boating safety outreach during the 2010 season.  The Clackamas County Marine Patrol conducted 4,234 boat examinations, issued 157 citations and 1,020 warnings, conducted 85 hull identification inspections, arrested two individuals for boating under the influence of intoxicants, conducted 14 boater education classes educating 1309 students, and recovered three stolen boats and three motors.  The Clackamas County Marine Patrol also took an innovative approach to educating floaters and tubers through enforcement during the 2009 boating season with a citation 'amnesty' program.  When Deputies issued an equipment violation citation to a boater (no life jacket or sound producing device), they were also given an amnesty card and instructed to show up at a specified location before their court date and bring with them the equipment related to the citation.  Boaters who complied had their citation dismissed.  In 2009, 395 citations were issued and in 2010, only 95.
                Additionally, Deputy Doug Olsen of the Marine Patrol was individually recognized for his efforts as an instructor for boat accident reconstruction investigations, and the contributions he's made toward recovering stolen boats and motors.  "Deputy Olsen has made it his personal mission to recover as much stolen property and returning it to the rightful owners as he can," said Dale Flowers, Law Enforcement Training Coordinator for the Marine Board.  "He has worked closely with the victims and the Marine Board, dedicating countless hours to bringing these thefts to a close.  His efforts have not been overlooked and his 100% recovery record speaks for itself," Flowers added.
