Boaters: Watch for Submerged Pilings at I-84 bridges Over Sandy River



TROUTDALE - As winter water levels rise, boaters are being warned to watch for submerged pilings in the Sandy River under Interstate 84 that can be difficult to see and potentially dangerous.  The pilings will be marked by buoys until the river level returns to normal next spring.

Contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation are working on a four-year project to replace the freeway bridges over the Sandy River and repair the bridges over nearby Jordan Road.  Pilings for a temporary work bridge will remain in the river through the winter, although the deck has been removed. Channel navigation lights and buoys have been installed for boater safety.  The channel lights, which are attached to the bridge, are located at the navigational opening over the main channel between the west-side bank and the sandbar.  Boaters should proceed through the area at a slow speed and keep a sharp lookout for these pilings.

Warning signs to boaters of the underwater hazards are posted at boat launches along the Sandy River, along with posters at nearby bait and tackle shops.
