Marine Board Recognizes Undersheriff for Life Saving Efforts
The Oregon State Marine Board recognized the life-saving efforts of Morrow County Undersheriff, Steve Myren, at their annual post-season Law Enforcement Conference, held on Monday, September 26 in Eugene.
Undersheriff Myren was supposed to have the day off, but instead, received a call to help patrol the marina during the Fourth of July fireworks celebration along the Columbia River. Myren was patrolling by boat when he saw a woman with an odd expression on her face while she was looking over the water. Picking up on the woman's body language, he approached her and she said someone in their party was overdue and they hadn't seen him in a while. So Myren started looking downstream. It was nearly dark but fortunately, the water was flat and calm, allowing for greater visibility. Off in the far distance, Myren said he could see "a little black speck" and headed the boat in that direction. What Myren found was a man clinging to an almost, completely submerged personal watercraft with only 6 inches of the boat above the water. "Fortunately, the man had a life jacket on, but he was very cold and becoming hypothermic," Myren said in an interview with the East Oregonian. Myren was able to save the man, recover the personal watercraft, and help them off the water. Undersheriff Myren continued his patrol that evening without fanfare. "The Undersheriff chalked this situation up to just doing his job and being at the right place at the right time," said Marty Law, Boating Safety Manager from the Marine Board, who read the East Oregonian article, in part, to the attendees of the Marine Board's post-season conference. "Although Undersheriff Myren was unable to attend the conference, we wanted to recognize him for his life saving efforts. Thank you."
