Marine Board Approves Round One Grants for the Southern Region Boating Facilities

The Oregon State Marine Board approved several grants for boating access facility improvements in the southern Oregon region at their last quarterly Board meeting, held on June 23, in Salem. The agency received 34 applications for Round 1 Grants that identified
$11 million in project needs with $6.2 million requested from the Marine Board. The Board awarded $2,404,966 in state funds and $1,951,296 in federal funds for the 2015-2017 biennium boating facility improvement projects.
The applicants below received funding for the following access projects in the southern region:

Douglas County will use the grant funds on the North Fork Umpqua River for the repair of the nearly 2-foot drop off at the toe of the ramp at Hestness Landing. The drop-off creates a dangerous situation for recreational boaters who are launching and retrieving their boats onto trailers. Fixing the toe of the ramp will make launching and retrieving faster and much safer.
The Bureau of Land Management will replace the existing self-adjusting dock with 60 feet of cedar docks at Gerber Reservoir. This will improve safety for boaters who are launching and retrieving, reduce maintenance costs and reduce complaints by boaters.
Josephine County will use the grant funds to have a single-stall vault toilet installed at Galice Resort that provides year-round ADA access and sanitation.
The Marine Board is funded by registration fees and marine fuel taxes paid by boaters. No general fund tax dollars are used to support the agency or its programs. Boater-paid fees go back to boaters in the form of law enforcement services (on-the-water enforcement, training and equipment), education/outreach materials and boating access facilities. Fees charged by waterway managers for parking and launching, reduces Maintenance Assistance Program funds the Marine Board provides for qualifying grant recipients.
