Marine Board Seeks Public Comment on Boat Operations on Kinney Lake

         On February 3, the Oregon State Marine Board received a petition to open rulemaking to prohibit the use of motorboats on Kinney Lake in Wallowa County and is accepting written public comment.
            Kinney Lake is a privately owned irrigation reservoir located approximately six miles east of Joseph Oregon.  Through a 1965 agreement with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the reservoir is secondarily managed as a public trout fishery.  In the original agreement, the parties agreed to restrict the use of boats to protect the integrity of the dam. This was previously enforced through a fishing regulation that did not allow angling from floating devices.  Recently all parties agreed that fishing from watercraft would improve the public experience at the lake and the angling restriction was removed. However, it is still the desire of all parties to restrict the use of motorized boats to continue to protect the dam.
Written comments will be accepted until March 31, 2016 by 5 pm and can be submitted via email to osmb.rulemaking at state.or.us<mailto:osmb.rulemaking at state.or.us>  or by U.S. mail to: June LeTarte, Administrative Rules Coordinator, 435 Commercial Street NE, Suite 400, P.O. Box 14145, Salem, OR 97309-5056.  Comments via telephone will not be accepted.
The Board will be reviewing this petition at their quarterly Board meeting, scheduled for April 27, in Salem.  The Board may make a motion to open rulemaking, to draft a new rule or deny the petition.
