Good morning all,

Another opportunity to learn more about e-verify if you're not already using it. Oregon has two House Bills which would require employers to use e-verify as follows.

House Bill 2806

Sponsored by Representative THATCHER (Presession filed.)

                             SUMMARY

The following summary is not prepared by the sponsors of the
measure and is not a part of the body thereof subject to
consideration by the Legislative Assembly. It is an editor's
brief statement of the essential features of the measure as
introduced.

Limits deductibility of expenses related to employment of
workers hired on or after January 1, 2012, to workers whose
eligibility for employment in United States has been verified
through federal E-Verify employment verification system.
Requires public body to verify eligibility for employment in
United States for workers hired on or after January 1, 2012,
through E-Verify employment verification system. Requires person
contracting with public body to provide verification of
eligibility of contractor and contractor's employees to work in
United States.

House Bill 2973

Sponsored by Representative JENSON (Presession filed.)

                             SUMMARY

The following summary is not prepared by the sponsors of the
measure and is not a part of the body thereof subject to
consideration by the Legislative Assembly. It is an editor's
brief statement of the essential features of the measure as
introduced.

Requires employer to verify legal status of employee to be
employed in United States through federal E-Verify program prior
to deducting expenses related to worker's employment from Oregon
taxable income. Prohibits deduction of wages paid to unverified
employee as business expense for purposes of Oregon taxation.

The Portland Field Office of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will host a training session on E-Verify, presented by the Office of Verification in Washington, D.C.
This is a great opportunity to learn and ask questions about E-Verify from “the source.” While this two hour workshop will focus on E-Verify – rather than the I-9 - the instructor will be glad to discuss I-9 issues at the end of the workshop and will also stay for further questions and answers on either topic.
The two-hour workshop will be held on Friday, March 25th, at 10 a.m. in the 911 Federal Bldg. auditorium (adjacent to the Bonneville Power Administration). The address is 911 N.E. Holladay St., between N.E. 9th and N.E. 11th. The entrance to the building is on N.E. 11th (see attached map). Photo ID will be required to enter. There are no limitations on the number of people who can attend.
Please RSVP if possible by replying to ed.sale at dhs.gov
Thanks for your attention and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
