The next Gale webinar in the spring series for Oregon library staff, Finding eResources to Support Library Programming, is today from 11am to noon Pacific. See the email below for a description. Originally for library programming, we were thinking about holidays, Women?s History Month and the similar ?months,? etc., but you could also use what you learn to find resources to support the summer reading program theme. For example, you could create games like those in the Summer Reading section of the Gale Guided Tutorials page: http://www.gale.cengage.com/guidedtour/index.htm. You do not need to register for the webinar, and a PDF with access information is included in the postings on Northwest Central and the two Gale support sites for Oregon libraries. http://www.nwcentral.org/finding-eresources-support-library-programming-gale-webinar http://galesupport.com/oregon/ (Click on Training Opportunities in blue toolbar at top of page.) http://www.galesupport.com/oregonacad/ (Click on Training Info in column on right.) Children's: Alligator With Slogan Teen: Rainbow I will take these mock-ups to the State printing office later this month where a graphic designer will polish them up for us, add the signatures of the State Librarian and State Superintendent of Schools, and print hardcopies that will be distributed to schools and libraries statewide for FREE! All public libraries placed orders for these summer reading certificates on the 2011 Summer Reading Survey in September. Certificates will be shipped to public libraries the first week of June. As in the past digital copies will also be available to download and print on demand. I will let you know when the finalized digital copies are available online via this listserv. Public libraries may distribute Oregon Summer Reading Certificates to children and teens who complete their library's summer reading program or providing. Teachers, reading specialists, and school librarians may present them to students who read or listen to 10 books over the summer. The 2012 Summer Reading Program theme is night, the children's slogan is "Dream Big-READ!" and the teen slogan is "Own the Night". The children's summer reading art designed by Brian Lies and teen art by Christian Fuenfhausen is used on these certificates with permission through Oregon public libraries' memberships to the Collaborative Summer Library Program. The Oregon Summer Reading Certificates are made available to libraries, schools, and teachers at no cost thanks to a collaboration between the Oregon State Library, Oregon Department of Education, and Oregon Library Association and is funded by a generous donation from the Oregon Education Association. A special 'THANK YOU' goes out to Becky Pearson, the librarian at McMinnville Public Library for designing both of these winning certificates. You did a wonderful job! Message-ID: <813A01DF90DA7C4489F0AFC875D9964673B391ADEA@cesrv011.eugene1.net> Hi, again! Just another reminder that I am still soliciting nominations for this year's inaugural Graphic Rave. The list is looking pretty empty...let's work on fixing that! Also, Mark has graciously put together a category on the OYAN Goodreads page for Graphics Rave nominees; here's the link to that: http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/3611201?shelf=graphics-rave-nominees-2012. I've included my original e-mail below in case anyone had questions about the process! Thanks! Traci Hi, all! My name is Traci Glass, and I am the incoming vice co-chair of OYAN along with Aimee Meuchel. For those of you who are new to OYAN or the list serve, I am also the coordinator for Graphic Rave - OYAN's annual list of the best graphic novels, comics and manga for teens. This is our inaugural Graphic Rave, and I'm very excited to be coordinating the creation of the list of our recommended books in a graphic format! The process will be almost if not totally identical to the process we all go through to come up with our Book Rave list. Attached is the Graphic Rave nominations spreadsheet. New recommendations are in red, so this being the first publishing of this year's spreadsheet, all titles are in red. In future updates, previously suggested titles with a new nomination will get a red addition to the nominations number (always welcome as these might prompt others to give the book a try). Also included are the month and year of publication, author's name, and the book's genre. There's a "tags" field on the spreadsheet, in case a one word genre description just doesn't do it justice as well as a publisher field since one of our criteria will be highlighting works published by independent and smaller publishers as well as publishers located in the Pacific Northwest. Please note that books must be published between May 1, 2011 to April 30, 2012 to qualify. If you can't open up the attachment (which seems to be commonplace with those of you receiving this in the digest form), e-mail me and I can send you the file directly to your e-mail. When nominating a book, please include the author, title, genre, month and year of publication and publisher. Send all nominations to traci.l.glass at ci.eugene.or.us. The last day to nominate a title is June 1st. Here are some official dates to remember: * June 1: Nominations close. * June 15: Preliminary voting opens. * July 15: Preliminary voting closes. Again, please send all nominations to traci.l.glass at ci.eugene.or.us. Also, feel free to let me know if you have any questions! Thanks! [OSLIS is an information literacy website and the portal for K12 Oregon students and educators to access the statewide subscription databases.] In order to reduce SPAM bot traffic on OSLIS' Citation Maker, we added a simple CAPTCHA. Before being able to access any of the templates on any version of Citation Maker, users are prompted to enter a number between 0 and 9. A visual cue is provided in that the normally yellow source column on the right is initially grey but turns yellow again once the user enters a number between 0 and 9. Entering the CAPTCHA one time gives the user access to all of the templates until the browser session is closed. I tested the feature in multiple browsers and had no problems. If you notice any issues, please report them to me. On a different subject, we are working with a vendor on the OSLIS rebuild and estimate that the full OSLIS site will be available in early summer. Until then, OSLIS Lite will remain live. The OregonASK is requesting proposals for presenters at their annual afterschool conference November 3rd at Chemeketa Community College -all the information is attached. Last year someone from Deschutes County Library presented a session on integrating storytime/picture book reading with art and OYAN presented a session on teen development at this conference. In addition, I saw a handful of librarians attending this conference to learn more programming ideas for elementary, middle and high school kids. I know that OregonASK would particularly be interested in sessions by library staff on how to run a book group or book club and how to integrate reading and writing into their programs in a fun way. The Teen Video Challenge is a national competition for teens to get involved with reading and their public library's summer reading program. Winning videos were selected at the state level to be recognized as an official CSLP Teen Video Challenge winner for 2012. This video competition is in its second year of encouraging teens to get involved with promoting summer reading and public libraries with a focus on the CSLP 2012 slogan, "Own the Night." Each participating state selected one winning video to be named the official CSLP Teen Video Challenge state winner for 2012. Twenty-three states and over one hundred teens participated in the creation of these winning videos. The winners were announced on April 10, 2012 during the CSLP Annual Meeting held in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Official CSLP Teen Video Challenge winners were named from the following states: Alabama, California, Florida, Iowa, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, and Washington. To view this year's winning videos, please visit CSLP's website at www.cslpreads.org. The winning videos can be used by all teens and all public libraries to promote summer reading nationwide. The winning videos exemplify the diversity of our country and of the teens that created them. Whether produced by an individual teen, groups of teens, a teen library club, or a teen school group, all exhibit creativity and exemplify quality work on the part of the industrious teen film makers. Many videos use humor or literary references to communicate the "Own the Night" idea. Others use more introspective and informative approaches, incorporating inspirational quotes and original music compositions. Videos were submitted from libraries in communities of 2,000 people to libraries from larger metropolitan areas. In addition to promoting reading and the "Own the Night" slogan, it is clear from all these videos that teens value their public libraries. For their hard work and creativity, each winner for this year's competition will receive a monetary award of $275 and the associated public library will receive $100 plus a $50 gift certificate from Highsmith. The awards can be used as each winner sees fit. CSLP plans to continue the Teen Video Challenge as an annual competition. Please check the CSLP website (www.cslpreads.org) later this summer or in early fall for information on the 2013 Teen Video Challenge. CSLP is a grassroots consortium of all 50 states, Washington D.C., American Samoa, the Mariana Islands, Cayman Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia, working together to provide children, teens, and families with summer reading program and promotional materials for public libraries. ________________________________ DISCLAIMER: E-mails sent or received by City of Tigard employees are subject to public record laws.
