They are available for free online at: http://www.ala.org/yalsa/guidelines/teenspaces . These guidelines are a great tool for libraries that want to: * Improve how you reach teens online via your website, social networking (FaceBook), and other virtual spaces. * Rearrange and/or redecorate your current library space dedicated to teens. * Remodel to create a new teen space. * Plan teens space in a new library. Here are a few things from their introduction: * Teens experience rapid physical, emotional and social changes while developing their intellectual capabilities and personal values, understanding and accepting their sexuality, and identifying their educational and occupational options. Libraries are vital to today's teens in order for them to achieve a successful transition from childhood to adulthood. They offer the resources and the environment that foster positive intellectual, emotional and social development of tomorrow's adults. All of these factors contribute to the need for distinct teen spaces, both in-library and virtually. * Not every element of the guidelines may apply to every public library situation, but the guidelines can serve as a place to begin the conversation about what constitutes excellent public library space for teens. * This is a tool for evaluating a public library's overall level of success in providing physical and virtual space dedicated to teens, aged 12-18. The WrestleMania Reading Challenge is sponsored by ALA's Young Adult Library Services Association and WWE. The program encourages teens and tweens to read during Teen Read Week and beyond. By doing so, they can win prizes donated by WWE and other organizations. The goal of this program is to reach reluctant readers and get more teens reading beyond Teen Read Week by implementing a reading incentive program that provides prizes from WWE as a reward. According to Nielsen Media Research, WWE's programming reaches 15.8 million fans each week, of which 23 percent is under age 18. 1. Register your library or school: librarians & educators must register by July 31, 2012. To register, complete this brief online form. 2. Promote the contest to your teens: World Wrestling Entertainment will send promotional posters to all registrants in Sept. Registrants can download completion certificates, pledge forms, and other collateral from YALSA and WWE after registration closes. 3. Help teens submit their entries: tweens & teens will write a letter to their favorite WWE Superstar that convinces the Superstar to read the tween/teen's favorite book, then submit it via an online form that will be made available between Oct. 1 - 31, 2012. If you don't have a microphone, you can add your two cents using a chat feature and the meeting administrator (Mark Richardson) will read aloud your comment. A setup with headphones with boom microphone is ideal. You can also use a phone to call in to listen and talk while watching the meeting online. However, the GoToMeeting phone number is long distance and it can be a little harder to hear, so please bear that in mind! I've attached a guide which may help using Go To Meeting for the first time. If you get this in digest form, you won't be able to see the attachment, so email me separately or check the version cross-posted to memberclicks if you are an OLA member in good standing. The meeting starts at 11am, but please give yourself time to log on and make sure everything seems alright (microphone, webcam, speakers). You'll be able to get to the site as early as 10:30. If you see "waiting for organizer" that just means we are still setting up and we'll be online soon. Lastly, it is best to stay logged on during the lunch break. We'll be stepping out, but we'll let you know when we'll be back. You'll follow these instructions: 1. We learned that while many Oregon libraries are interested, a significant number are not. Therefore the State Library, CSD, and OYAN have decided not to pursue a statewide contract for summer reading software. Due to the fact that many libraries are interested in summer reading software and may be able to form a consortium to get a better price, I have scheduled a webinar with one summer reading software vendor for any of you who are interested-details below. After this webinar, interested libraries will be responsible for any next steps. If some libraries are interested in exploring a consortium, then they will have to take the lead on facilitating that effort. Libraries will also be responsible for scheduling webinars or product demos with other vendors of summer reading software. Evanced Summer Reader webinar October 3, 2012 2:00pm-3:00pm This webinar will give libraries across Oregon the opportunity to get a general overview of a whole suite of products to help keep their libraries at the center of their communities. Since this is new, please considering sharing your ideas about how you plan to promote it at your library via this email discussion list. An OLA Hotline article about the proclamation suggests a ideas to get your gears turning: Governor Kitzhaber Proclaims October Information Literacy Month in Oregon! It is my pleasure to announce that on June 26th, 2012, Governor Kitzhaber proclaimed October to be Information Literacy month in Oregon. In addition to wide support from the library community, this initiative also enjoys the support of writing and English instructors. The National Forum on Information Literacy is leading an effort to encourage all states and U.S. territories to submit requests to their governors? offices to proclaim October as Information Literacy Month. With a signed proclamation in hand, Oregon is ahead of many other states in the IL proclamation initiative. Thank you to all who worked on drafting and endorsing the proclamation, and in particular State Librarian MaryKay Dahlgreen for coordinating the effort and shepherding the request through to the Governor?s office. In anticipation of outreach in and around October, the OLA Library Development and Legislative Committee (LDLC) is encouraging Oregon libraries of all types to gather patron stories of what the library means to them. Personal stories are a powerful way to describe our work to library stakeholders, especially when combined with evidence-based data reflecting our service. The LDLC is also encouraging libraries to send stakeholders targeted invitations to visit the library for a first-hand look at the dynamic role libraries play in our communities. Let?s gather our data, collect the stories and use them in October to celebrate our first statewide Information Literacy Month. Watch the libs-or list and visit the LDLC webpage for updates. -Michele Burke, OLA Vice-President/President-Elect Katie Anderson, Library Development Services * Youth Services Consultant * Oregon Center for the Book Coordinator * Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, OR 97301 katie.anderson at state.or.us, 503-378-2528 If they hyperlink doesn't work, try this URL: http://olahotline.wordpress.com/2012/07/15/july-15-2012-vol-18-no-14-happenings/ [http://oasl.memberclicks.net/message/image/48d4c5ae-cb36-4975-99cb-bc857ee4f79c] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
