Message-ID: <813A01DF90DA7C4489F0AFC875D99646F7BE3B23DB@cesrv011.eugene1.net> Hi, all! It's me again! I just wanted to send out a reminder that you have until 6pm on July 11th to cast your votes for the 2013 Graphic Rave! C'mon! Read some comics and pick your favorites for the teens of Oregon! They're counting on you! Just in case you've forgotten...here's all the information you need to know... Survey Monkey is ready to start taking your votes for the Graphic Rave 2013: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PLFMQH8 Please refer to the attached spreadsheet for more information about each nominated title. There is a choice for a "no" vote. If you feel strongly that a nominated book does not deserve to be a part of the Graphic Rave, please vote no. Please, please only use the "no" vote if you feel a certain book is very inappropriate for this list - not just something you don't personally like. I'll subtract no votes from the yes votes to get a total. If you like a title, vote yes! Survey Monkey uses IP addresses to remember votes; you'll be able to add votes as you keep reading nominated titles, as well as see how you've already voted (assuming you always vote from the same computer). You can vote until 6pm on July 11th. Be prepared to discuss and debate the results at the Summer Membership meeting on July 12th. Thanks for voting! Traci P.S. The project is called SL3: School Libraries, Summer Lunch, and Summer Learning. Here is an article to learn more about it; it also identifies which school libraries are participating: http://www.oregonask.org/content/combat-summer-learning-loss-summer-food-meets-summer-reading The article doesn't provide details about how local public libraries and the State Library support this project. Here is a little more information about that: * All participating school library were required to contact their local public library to inquire about partnering to provide summer reading activities to the kids attending the school for lunch and the school library. I provided participating schools with library contact information. * If a public library was not able to partner with the school, then the State Library provided them with several summer reading activities from the CSLP Summer Reading Manual that they can choose to use this summer. * OregonASK sponsored a webinar for staff responsible for running the school library during the summer. I presented during this webinar on how to help kids select the right book based on reading level and interest and several suggestions on what to do to help kids maintain their reading level. This project is part of the State Library's efforts to partner more with the Oregon Department of Education to encourage summer lunch sites, public libraries, and school libraries to partner over the summer. There is interest among the National Summer Learning Association, USDA, OregonASK, the Oregon Department of Education, and the State library in expanding this project if it is successful. Please let me know if you have any questions or ideas. Here's the answer: You prepay before you park, and you can park for a maximum of 3 hours in the garage under the library; you can enter the underground garage on the west side of the building. There are also 2 other parking garages 1 and 2 blocks north of the library (The Broadway North & South garages) - in those you can pay for a maximum of 6 hours (or maybe even all day, I think). In all three of the garages you can pay with cash or credit card (and I think coins, too). Thanks! To: Oregon Educators Re: Oregon Summer Reading Opportunity: Free Online Books for Summer Reading on myON! There is little that impacts student success as much as strong literacy skills, and we are pleased to invite you, your children, and your community to join our statewide efforts to develop a culture of reading in Oregon. ODE is partnering with organizations including schools, libraries, Boys & Girls Clubs, scout troops, schools, faith-based organizations, United Way and other non-profits statewide to promote reading over the summer months. Join us by including reading within your summer programs this year. Thanks to a new partnership with myON BOOKS, students and their families across the state will have unlimited access to thousands of digital books on myON, giving families an opportunity to share rich, grade-appropriate, literacy experiences together regardless of socioeconomic status, access to a local library, or whether or not there is a proficient reader in the home. Through this summer partnership, Oregon students and families can access: * More than 3,000 digital books from Capstone and additional publishing partners, ranging from illustrated and picture books to chapter books, graphic novels, literary non-fiction, photo and informational texts spanning multiple eras and cultures. * Capstone imprints include Capstone Press, Heinemann-Raintree, Picture Window Books, Compass Point Books and Stone Arch Books. * Digital books from the following publishing partners will also be available: August House Little Folk/ Story Cove, Bellwether, Hothouse, Mikaya Press, Orca, Reference Point, Saddleback and Sylvan-Dell. * The collection includes 70% nonfiction, 10% Spanish or dual language, 20% high interest books for struggling readers, and is continually growing. * A wide range of titles and topics provides varying levels of text complexity and supports close reading in a range of genres and content areas, including history/social studies, science and technical works. * Users can read the books independently or listen to them, and they can choose whether or not to have sentences highlighted while in narration mode. * Through a secure environment, students have unlimited access to the entire digital library, within the parameters set by the Oregon Department of Education. We are encouraging all of our readers to read anything that interests them -including graphic novels, non-fiction books, magazines and newspapers- whether online or in print. We suggest that they: * Read with someone * Read to someone * Share with someone what he/she has read * Listen to someone read * Help others read * Read independently The Oregon summer reading partnership with myON will be available at NO COST until September 15, 2013. For more on gaining access to myON BOOKS at http://myOn.com, please see the attached document for login directions. If you have questions or need additional assistance, please contact Carla Wade at Carla.Wade at ode.state.or.us or Drew Hinds at Drew.Hinds at ode.state.or.us. Please share this resource and opportunity with your communities and help build a strong reading culture in Oregon this summer! For even more reading opportunities, take advantage of the magazine, newspaper, and reference book content in the Gale databases available on OSLIS (www.oslis.org). For example, students can read articles from Cobblestone, Faces, and The New York Times or learn about their favorite creatures in Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia. OSLIS is an information literacy website from the Oregon Association of School Libraries in partnership with the Oregon State Library and is supported with an IMLS grant. If your kids see you reading, they will want to read. If you drag your kid to every Civil War battle site because you are a Civil War buff, your child may ace his or her American history exams. When you volunteer at your child's school, your kids are going to see how important their education is to you." * "The authors recommend a large number of parent-child and pro-school activities. Some examples are reading aloud to your child each day starting at birth, taking your [teen] to the library, playing games with your [teen], contacting his or her teachers, visiting his or her school."
