When kids are out of school over the summer they can lose up to 3 months of skills they learned during the previous school year if they don't participate in high-quality enrichment activities such as the summer reading program at their local library. Attached are two infographics created by Katelyn Van Lankvelt, a current student at GSLIS, based on The Dominican Study: Public Library Summer Reading Programs Close the Reading Gap. This study was conducted from October 2006 through September 2010 and it examined the impact of pubic library summer reading programs on achievement among 3rd and 4th grade students. These graphics may be good to... * Post in your library during summer reading registration/sign-ups. * Share with key stakeholders in your community to encourage them to support the summer reading program. * Share with parents to encourage them to help their kids participate in the summer reading program. * Share with teachers and afterschool providers so they encourage their students to participate in the summer reading program over the summer. Message-ID: <640435851FD7CB4AB3C4BE0D1963BA244575DAF6@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> You may have seen the following announcement on libs-or and deleted it thinking 'Oh, this is just for school and academic librarians', but it's not! The Oregon Information Literacy Summit is for staff at all types of libraries who help youth develop information literacy skills. While most of the activities at the Oregon Information Literacy Summit will be informative because you work with youth and support their information literacy development, there are a couple of presentation that may be particularly useful to public library youth services staff like yourself. They are: "Kids, Information Literacy and the Public Library" What does information literacy for students look like at the public library? Multnomah County Library youth services librarians have successfully partnered with county schools to increase the information literacy of K-12 students. The library's upgraded Homework Center website utilizes blog posts highlighting resources on common curriculum topics as well as information literacy videos created by local teens. The library's School Corps outreach program has created several programs at the request of educators, including ones on library resources, Internet safety, and online searching for text and images. "IL for All: Using Pinterest and other social media to expand learners' understanding of information literacy for active engagement in creative assignments." Sara Jameson, Senior Instructor/Asst. Director of Writing, OSU; Dalicia.Fennell at oregonstate.edu, Writing Instructor, OSU; Alexandra.Hesbrook at oregonstate.edu, Writing Instructor, OSU Michele.Burke at chemeketa.edu, Reference Librarian, Chemeketa Community College This presentation will show how Pinterest, Facebook, and other social media sites can be effectively used for active student engagement in classes, for research and for assignments. We will look at ways to use Pinterest in the research process, such as searching Library and public Pinterest boards as databases and sources of information, and using individual and class Pinterest boards to share findings as a research log. Individual and class Pinterest boards can also become a final product. As active learners ourselves, we will share ways to add engaged value to classes. Message-ID: <813A01DF90DA7C4489F0AFC875D99646FFBFCA0588@cesrv011.eugene1.net> Hi! Yes! It's time for Graphic Rave nominations!! For those of you who are new to OYAN, I am the coordinator for Graphic Rave - OYAN's annual list of the best graphic novels, comics and manga for teens. The process will be almost if not totally identical to the process we all go through to come up with our Book Rave list. Attached is the Graphic Rave nominations spreadsheet. New recommendations are in red, so this being the first publishing of this year's spreadsheet, all titles are in red. In future updates, previously suggested titles with a new nomination will get a red addition to the nominations number (always welcome as these might prompt others to give the book a try). Also included are the month and year of publication, author's name, and the book's genre. There's a "tags" field on the spreadsheet, in case a one word genre description just doesn't do it justice as well as a publisher field since one of our criteria will be highlighting works published by independent and smaller publishers as well as publishers located in the Pacific Northwest. Only books published from May 1, 2013 to April 30, 2014 can be included on the Graphic Rave. When nominating a book, please include the author, title, genre, month and year of publication and publisher. Send all nominations to traci.l.glass at ci.eugene.or.us. The last day to nominate a title is June 1st. Here are some official dates to remember: * June 1: Nominations close. * June 15: Preliminary voting opens. * July 15: Preliminary voting closes. Again, please send all nominations to traci.l.glass at ci.eugene.or.us. Also, feel free to let me know if you have any questions! Thanks! As the good folks at CSLP say, "View and share these videos, link to them from your library webpage, post them to social networks, and use them to get the word out to teens." The screening of these videos has been one of the best things for me at the CSLP Annual Meeting, which it has been my privilege to attend as your OYAN CSLP Liaison for the past two years. Now that you see how fabulous it is, do you want to stand for election for this exciting office? Think about it. Next year's meeting is in Newport, RI, and OYAN pays your way! It's pretty incredible, and I'm happy to stand for another 2-year term, but I don't want to hog all the goodies for myself. Look for the announcement of the 2015 Teen Video Challenge after the 2014 CSLP Survey goes out in the Fall. Next year's theme is Heroes, with the teen slogan of "Unmask!" Term clusters, or visual search results, organize results based on frequently recurring terms and allow users to discover hidden connections. Term clusters can be used to expand or narrow a topic, identify new topics of interest, guide research structure, and more. After doing a search in PowerSearch, Academic OneFile, InfoTrac Student, Informe, and other InfoTrac databases, you will see ?Term Clusters? under ?Analyze? in the column on the left. Click on that to see a visual representation of related topics. Or, start a search by first clicking on ?Term Clusters? in the orange toolbar at the top of the database page. For an example, see the attachment. To learn more about how to use term clusters and for a complete list of which Gale databases include the tool, refer to this tip sheet. I'm currently serving on the board of YALSA; we've hosted a series of town halls this past year and have our next one on May 7. This virtual meeting is expressly for gathering feedback on members' personal experiences with YALSA-the good, the great, the iffy. From YALSA's President, Shannon Peterson: YALSA Virtual Town Hall Wednesday, May 7th at 2pm EST (11am Pacific) Mark your calendars, it's time to chat again YALSA land! Please join me on May 7th to talk turkey about your YALSA experience. In particular, I look forward to your honest feedback regarding the following questions: * What is it about the organization that has earned your loyalty? * What does YALSA do that frustrates you? * What are three things that YALSA could do for you that would add the most professional value? * What are your three biggest concerns or needs? Your thoughts can help YALSA become an even more responsive and relevant organization, so please speak up! Thanks and I look forward to talking next month. --Shannon Peterson, YALSA President If you are able to attend the town hall, this link will send you to the Adobe Connect chat room: http://connectpro87048468.adobeconnect.com/townhall_echats/. While we are mainly looking to hear from current members, if you are a lapsed or non- YALSA member, we'd also like to hear from you! You can attend the chat or send me your thoughts off-list. This is not an endorsement, please be sure to use your library?s collection development policy to make sure these items are a good fit for your library. Dear Librarians, I recently created a website, www.KateMaxwellBooks.com, offering seven free Middle Grade books I wrote to encourage reading and writing among students. My books are all in the genre of Magical Realism and include titles such as: Escape From Atlantis, The Boy Who Saw Ghosts, and Karvaal: A World of Now. They all have empowering characters, fast-paced plots, and were written to stimulate a child?s imagination. The books are appropriate for ages 10 to 14 and are available as free downloads. They can also be purchased cheaply through Kindle and Lulu. There are also fun writing activities on the site and videos with sample chapter readings. I hope you will review my site and consider adding the link to your collection for the Summer Reading Program. Thank you for your valuable time. You might start with searching for "fizz boom read" and "spark a reaction" on Pinterest.
