Message-ID: <640435851FD7CB4AB3C4BE0D1963BA2452B09429@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> This summer Tualatin Public Library and Tigard Public Library are partnering with their local swimming pools! You may want to file this summer reading idea and think about doing something similar in your community next summer because the 2016 summer reading theme is fitness/wellness and the slogan for children will be 'On Your Mark, Get Set... READ!' and for teens 'Get in the Game-READ!' The 2016 children's summer reading poster and banner may include images of swimming (other sports and wellness activities may be featured in other art and products). Here is what Tualatin and Tigard libraries are doing: The two libraries are partnering with the Tigard-Tualatin Aquatic District (TTAD). TTAD provided the libraries with pool passes to distribute to children and teens who participate in the summer reading program. The way Tigard is distributing the pool passes is: Independent Readers and Teens all have an opportunity to enter weekly bonus prize drawings for summer reading. In order to enter the drawings, they have to tell a librarian about something they've read or listened to. Just for entering the bonus prize drawing, youth get a free coupon to swim at TTAD. The way Tualatin is distributing the pool passes is: When children and teens sign-up for the summer reading program they get a free coupon to swim for Tualatin Hills Parks & Recreation pool. When children and teens finish the summer reading program, they each get a free coupon to swim at TTAD. [Slogan Text][Cooper_laughing] Summer Reading 2015 at Oregon libraries! Message-ID: Hi everyone, I've been doing a bit of freelance writing for Library Journal and SLJ... the assignment I'm working on now is a tricky one so I thought I'd send it out to you all to see if there's an Oregon library doing anything that would fit the scope of this article. I am looking for programming in libraries that supplements/includes the use of online language learning software/websites such as Rosetta Stone, Mango, Transparent, etc. From my editor: "We're particularly interested in examples of [language learning] programming that don't require the library to have staff who are knowledgeable in a given language-conversation groups, programs that tap community members as local experts, anything that a library can implement who may not have expertise in the subject area but wants to bolster individual online learning with group support. We're also very interested in any measurements of outcomes-whether those with in-person support are more likely to persist longer or attain higher levels of mastery or any other metric that might indicate efficacy and what it is tied to. What I don't want to get into is full-on in person classes taught in libraries without using online software-that's beyond the mandate of this piece, which is geared to libraries that are trying to increase the use and impact of their subscriptions but don't have the people and knowledge to teach languages on their own." Let me know if you have a program that fits the bill at your library, or feel free to pass me on to someone else in your system. This article can include ESL programming as long as it does also make use of the online aspect and isn't a formalized English class. Thanks! Questions? Contact the American Library Association (ALA) staff at 1-800-545-2433, ext. 5045, or publicprograms at ala.org. Libraries invited to apply for Great Stories Club programming grants for at-risk teens The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office invites libraries to apply for the Great Stories Club, a reading and discussion program for at-risk teens. Eligible libraries are located within or working in partnership with organizations that serve at-risk youth, such as alternative high schools, juvenile justice organizations, homeless shelters, foster care agencies, teen parenting programs, residential treatment facilities and other nonprofit and community agencies. Up to 50 grants will be awarded. Working with small groups of six to 10 teens, grantees will host reading and discussion events for each of three selected book titles. The titles - selected in consultation with librarian advisors and humanities scholars - are chosen to resonate with reluctant readers struggling with complex issues like incarceration, violence and poverty. Visit https://apply.ala.org/gscmedia for full guidelines and to apply online. Applications are due Sept. 15. The theme for the current round of grants is "Hack the Feed: Media, Resistance, Revolution," and the books are "Feed" by M.T. Anderson, "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins, and "March: Books One" by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell. Grantees will receive: * 11 paperback copies of each of the three book selections (10 to gift to participants; 1 for discussion leader/library collection); * travel and accommodation expenses paid for attendance at the project orientation workshop for the library project directors, on Nov. 16, 2015, in Chicago; * training through periodic project webinars, a program planning guide, and other online support materials; * online access to professionally designed, customizable and downloadable resources for use with program participants; and * technical and programming support from the ALA Public Programs Office throughout the grant term. Programs that support the "Media" theme must take place between Jan. 1 and May 30, 2016. Two additional rounds of Great Stories Club grants are expected to be awarded in 2016 and 2017 with the themes of "The Art of Change: Creation, Growth and Transformation" and "Nature vs. Nurture: Origins of Teen Violence and Suicide." Libraries may participate in more than one round but must apply separately for each. The grant will be administered by ALA's Public Programs Office in partnership with the Association for Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA), including the Library Services for Youth in Custody and Library Services to the Incarcerated and Detained interest groups. The Great Stories Club has been made possible in part by a major grant from theNational Endowment for the Humanities: Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence. First offered as a pilot in 2006, ALA's Great Stories Club has reached 670 libraries in 49 states and more than 30,000 young adults (ages 12 to 21). Hope you will join us! ALA?s International Games Day Registration is open for 2015! International Games Day @ your library (IGD at yl) is an annual celebration of games, play, libraries and learning that is free for libraries! This event has only one requirement - you have to have some sort of game-related activity in or around your library, on or around the official date, Saturday November 21, 2015. That's it! The games can be videogames on a library console, tabletop games, social games, party games - whatever you think will work for your individual library and community. To register, fill out the form at http://bit.ly/IGD2015Registration and tell us a bit about your library and your plans for the day. Early registrants can choose corporate donated games and also sign up for some international inter-library events that will give your community the chance to connect to other library communities in other parts of the world. This is a world-wide event, with libraries on ALL SEVEN continents participating. Yes, that does include Antarctica! How's that for a great way to spark conversations about the importance, power and ubiquity of libraries? On our website, http://igd.ala.org, we have a blog, which publishes updates weekly on a range of topics to help inspire ideas, discussion, and of course learning around games and play, and a great press kit with posters and materials to help you promote the day in your library (http://igd.ala.org/library-press-kit/). -- ----------------------------- Teresa Slobuski Reference and Instruction Librarian - San Jose State University Library MLIS - Rutgers University, School of Communication and Information -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There were several pieces of legislation that affected the Oregon State Library and I wanted to update you on the final outcome of the Session for the State Library and libraries in Oregon. I am very pleased to announce that we are fully funded for the 2015-2017 biennium. As some of you may remember, we were only given one year of funding by the 2013 Legislature and given our second year in July of 2014. While we have a mostly flat budget we are very pleased that beginning in July of 2016 a position in Talking Book and Braille Library that has been funding on donation funds for a number of years will be shifted to general fund. We also received approval to add a librarian position, using federal LSTA funds, for the Answerland move to the State Library. HB 2479 which made changes to the Ready to Read Grant program and provided an increase in funding to accommodate the additional 15-17 years olds did not make it past the Committee phase and so will not be implemented. The Task Force that Katie Anderson convened last year did a great job of aligning the program with current education initiatives and I believe that the changes proposed were good ones. I will be working with the State Library Board and the public library community to determine our next steps. The one change that was not contingent upon passage of the bill was the move to outcome based evaluation and we will be moving forward with that requirement for Ready to Read grant reporting. The grant applications will go out early next week. Thank you for your patience while we waited for final word. HB 3523, which was introduced in April by the Joint Committee on Ways and Means and which outlines changes in State Library organization as well as approaches for reducing duplication, was passed and signed by the Governor. The bill makes changes to the make-up of the State Library Board, makes the State Librarian a gubernatorial appointment, and directs the State Library to review and approve state agency electronic and print subscriptions as well as certifying other state agency libraries. This bill becomes effective on January 1, 2016 which provides us with some time to propose administrative rules to the State Library Board in December. We will be working with other state agency staff to draft the rules and there will be public hearings and opportunities for public comment on the rules before adoption by January 1, 2016. The 2013-2015 biennium was very interesting for the State Library and I believe that 2015-2017 will also be interesting, just in a different way. Thanks to all of you for your support as well as your suggestions and ideas. It is a pleasure to have such a strong relationship between the State Library and the Oregon library community. Thanks also to the staff of the State Library who have worked through very uncertain and difficult times and are stronger than ever. The State Library Board, under the leadership of Aletha Bonebrake, has created an excellent strategic plan that will help us continue to improve and build over the next two years. I have attached a recap I compiled of the 2013-2015 biennium, it was good for me to review what happened this biennium as we move forward into the next one. If you read LTLO, the State Library's newsletter, you know that Willamette Writers has adopted Oregon's Letters About Literature program. (Thanks, Willamette Writers!) The way students enter the contest will not change. That's because students always send entries to the national Letters About Literature coordinator, per the directions on the annual entry form. I will help Willamette Writers promote the program on Oregon library listservs. Here's the information I shared in the July LTLO: As you probably know by now, this was the last year for staff at the State Library to coordinate Oregon's participation in the national Letters About Literature program. Staff reached out to a few organizations about adopting the reading and writing contest, and Willamette Writers agreed to take it on. Thanks to their board for that decision! Here's a bit about their organization: "Willamette Writers is the largest writers organization in Oregon and one of the largest in the United States. Writers of all genres and at all stages of their careers are invited to join." What does this mean for Oregon 4th - 12th graders, educators, and library staff who want to participate in Letters About Literature next school year? Since students' letters are sent directly to the national coordinator at the Library of Congress, that part will not change. Entries are usually due in December or January, and information will be posted on the State Library's and Willamette Writers' websites in the fall. However, folks from Willamette Writers will coordinate judging of Oregon letters that make it through the national screening, and they will determine how best to honor those being recognized in Oregon. Jen Maurer, the School Library Consultant at the State Library, will work closely with Blythe Ayne, the Awards and Writing Contests Director for Willamette Writers, to pave the way for a smooth transition. If you have questions, please email Jen, or call her at 503-378-5011. Look for more info around late September. Thanks very much to Willamette Writers for guaranteeing that Letters About Literature will continue in Oregon. If so, it's time to weed! We all judge a book by its cover, but it is doubly true for children and teens. Tempt them by having space on your shelves so they can actually see those enticing covers! Get rid of some books so kids and teens can easily see the covers while browsing without having to pull each book completely off the shelf. Get rid of even more books so you can display books face-out on a few shelves. It's time to get rid of those materials that just aren't circulating even though you love them, the out-of-date non-fiction, and the tattered well-loved books that needed to be replaced 10 circs ago! Here's a book to help you do this difficult, and sometimes heart-wrenching task. The following new title is available for interlibrary loan from the Oregon State Library. [http://www.alastore.ala.org/images/Vnuk_300.jpg] Vnuk, Rebecca. The Weeding Handbook: A Shelf-by-Shelf Guide. ALA Editions, 2015. ISBN: 978-0-8389-1327-7 Description "No! We can't rid of that!" Vnuk, author of the popular "Weeding Tips" column on Booklist Online, is here to show you that yes, you can. A library is an ever-changing organism; when done the right way, weeding helps a library thrive by focusing its resources on those parts of the collection that are the most useful to its users. [Publisher's description] Oriented toward public library collections. Table of Contents Available on the on the LIS Collection Blog: http://osl-lis.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-weeding-handbook-shelf-by-shelf.html If you would like to request this or other materials from the Oregon State Library please use your library's established interlibrary loan process (e.g. OCLC or ALA request form). Otherwise, send your full name, the name of your library, complete title information, shipping address, and a phone number to the document delivery department at library.request at state.or.us or (fax) 503-588-7119. Items will be checked out to your library, not to you personally, for 4 weeks (print materials) or 2 weeks (videos). Materials will be delivered via mail or Orbis Cascade Alliance Courier, and you may return them the same way. Normally a single copy is purchased and is loaned on a first-come-first-serve basis. You may be put on a hold list for several weeks. Most library staff are able to use their library's interlibrary loan service to borrow professional development material. However, if you do not have access to these services or are not currently affiliated with a library, please contact me to discuss alternative options for borrowing the material. Be sure to check out our Library and Information Science (LIS) blog to discover the most recent additions to our LIS collection and search our catalog for our complete holdings. The library science collection is meant to support the whole Oregon library community. Library Support and Development Services welcomes your suggestions for acquisitions - see the blog for an input form or email us! Here?s an update. ? Research In Context is live. ? It is designed for students in grades 6-8 and replaces these databases, which are no longer available: o Discovering Collection o Junior Reference Collection o Student Resource Center Junior (different than Student Resources In Context, which is not changing) o InfoTrac Junior ? Since one function of Gale PowerSearch is to serve as the Gale common menu, you can find Research In Context by clicking on PowerSearch and scrolling through the database list. See the next bullet about adding a specific link to RIC on your database page. ? Please alert the person who updates the database page on your library?s website. Database icons and library-specific URLs are available on the Gale support site for Oregon library staff. ? Research In Context?s interface is very similar to that of the other In Context products ? like Opposing Viewpoints, Students Resources In Context, and U.S. History In Context ? with a few intentional but minor differences. Read more about the database on the Research In Context product page. ? If you are familiar with the other In Context products, there?s not much to learn with RIC. Explore the brief video tutorials for a quick overview. Sometime in August, you should start to see RIC sessions on the webinar calendar. After Gale hosts a few RIC webinars, they will post one on the recorded webinars page. ? Free promotional posters, bookmarks, and tent cards should be available on the Gale Promo site by the fall. Presenting fresh ways of thinking about the role of the teen services librarian and how it fits into the organizational structure, Vel?squez * Combines field-tested approaches with current research to tackle common teen library service issues such as truancy, curfews, programming philosophy and mission, privacy, and organizational resistance, whether subtle or overt * Addresses each topic from the perspective of working with teens, family members, fellow colleagues, and community stakeholders * Presents realistic strategies to help shift a library's culture towards one that embraces teens and teen services * Shows how to get the most out of a library's teen space, discussing factors like location, age restrictions, time of day restrictions, and staffing, plus suggestions for using the shelf-space of the YA collection as a starting point This book goes beyond the "what" and "how" of teen services to get to the "why," ensuring that both new and experienced practitioners will understand the ways teens want to use public space, discover and create information, and interact with peers and adults. Thank you for your patience. Most library staff are able to use their library's interlibrary loan service to borrow professional development material. However, if you do not have access to these services or are not currently affiliated with a library, please contact me (katie.anderson at state.or.us) to discuss alternative options for borrowing the material. Be sure to check out our Library and Information Science (LIS) blog to discover the most recent additions to our LIS collection and search our catalog for our complete holdings. The library science collection is meant to support the whole Oregon library community. The Library Development Division welcomes your suggestions for acquisitions - see the blog for an input form or email us! Earlier this week an Oregon librarian asked about library services for people with dyslexia, with a specific question about the availability of books published in dyslexic font. I thought many of you would be interested to know what we found. * The Oregon Talking Book and Braille Library offers audio books for any Oregonian who cannot read or understand standard printed material as a result of a learning disability or brain injury. If your patron is interested, have them fill out the attached application and have it signed only by their medical doctor. Once signed just mail it to Talking Book (address is on the form) and we will begin their library service immediately. Service includes a free listening device that is checked-out to the patron indefinitely or they can download audio books to their own device. * The OverDrive app now features a dyslexic font option. My understanding based on this article is that if customers download the OverDrive app and use it to read OverDrive eBooks, then they can change the font of all the eBooks into 'OpenDyslexic' or 'OpenDyslexic Bold'. Here is what one Oregon librarian says about this, "I had a few minutes to work with Overdrive and did have a chance to download a book and then set the font to "Open Dyslexic" and "Open Dyslexic Bold." It was really easy to do. You do need to set the font/type once a book is downloaded. You can also set to Dyslexic font/type for Library2Go home page. Very cool!" * Dyslexie Font seems to be one of two leaders in dyslexic fonts and publishing books in dyslexic font. * The other leader seems to be OpenDyslexic. Both Dyslexie Font and OpenDyslexic websites include children's books published in the fonts. * Amazon.com has a series of Dyslexic-Friendly Edition classics like The Scarlet Letter, Little Women, etc. It looks like they have just begun to doing DyslexiAssist Enabled eBooks; I only found three titles and they were all published this year. * My favorite resource for helping kids with learning disabilities learn to read, including dyslexia, is LDonline. I subscribe to the newsletter which usually includes articles with several practical tips and advice, and more scholarly/informational articles too. While it's specific to children with disabilities, I'd recommend this to anyone struggling to help their child learn to read. If you have any more information or resources on this topic that may be helpful to other libraries, please 'reply all' to share them with the group. Message-ID: <640435851FD7CB4AB3C4BE0D1963BA245C43F26B@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> I just learned about this resources from ALA's Association for Library Services to Children. It may help you include diverse books in your collection, programming, book lists, and other services. Please remember to follow your library's policies to review all possible books to make sure they are an appropriate fit for your library and community. Nonfiction Booklist: http://www.nonfictionbooklist.com/ Questions? Use this online contact form: http://www.nonfictionbooklist.com/contact The following is the description from their website. Searchable Booklist of Diverse Nonfiction Literature for Young Readers This project is meant to rejuvenate interest in nonfiction literature among young readers, while at the same time serving as a resource for K-12 educators who seek nonfiction books that complement their lesson plans. Each book we've chosen is high quality and reflects non-dominant racial and cultural truths. Common Core State Standards has created a need for greater emphasis on informational texts that are appealing and can be used in multiple subject areas. This site is intended for educators who are searching for good, diverse literature for your classrooms. We also hope that librarians in schools and in branch libraries, parents, students, and anyone else interested in locating good books will use this site. * Search over 300 high-quality books for children and young adults. * Locate the books you want at a library near you through a worldwide digital library catalog. Dragons in the Stacks: A Teen Librarian's Guide to Tabletop Role-Playing by Santa Barbara, CA: Libraries Unlimited. 978-1-61069-261-8. A one-stop, complete guide to tabletop role-playing games for novice librarians as well as seasoned players. Tabletop role-playing games (RPGs) are a perfect fit for library teen services. They not only hold great appeal for teen patrons, but also help build important skills ranging from math and literacy to leadership and dramatics. Role-playing games are cost-effective too. Dragons in the Stacks explains why RPGs are so effective at holding teenagers' attention, identifies their specific benefits, outlines how to select and maintain a RPG collection, and demonstrates how they can enhance teen services and be used in teen programs. Detailed reviews of role-playing games are included as well, with pointers on their strengths, weaknesses, and library applications. Coauthored by an experienced young adult librarian and an adult services librarian, this is the definitive guide to RPGs in the library, and the only one currently available. Features * Discusses collection development, cataloging, and programs for teens * Supplies detailed reviews of scores of popular and less well-known role-playing games * Outlines a variety of affordable, effective programs for teens that involve role-playing tabletop games (book description) If you would like to request this or other materials from the Oregon State Library please use your library's established interlibrary loan process (e.g. Thank you for your patience. Most library staff are able to use their library's interlibrary loan service to borrow professional development material. However, if you do not have access to these services or are not currently affiliated with a library, please contact me (katie.anderson at state.or.us) to discuss alternative options for borrowing the material.
