Hey there.

Today I helped a young gentleman in his mid-teens who is looking for funny
contemporary graphic novels-- ones that don't feature romance. He's like
the James Patterson Maximum Ride graphic novels. My suggestions to him so
far:

   - Nimona by Stevenson
   - Yotsuba&! by Azuma
   - Meanwhile by Shiga
   - Lowriders in Space by Camper
   - Wild card: Ouran High School Host Club by Hatori

I feel like I'm missing something. Would any of you have any other ideas?

I might also suggest Bandette (v. 1 & 2) by Paul Tobin and the Percy
Jackson graphic novels (if he hasn't already read them).

You could try The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, though there's a tiny bit of romantic interest...not sure if the humor would outweigh the romance, but I found them hilarious!

I'm a big fan of Azumanga Daioh, which has no romance (but it does have an almost entirely female cast, if that's a problem). I also lie the Three Thieves series by Scott Chantler (the first book is "The Tower of Treasure, I believe) and Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant, which are both swashbucklers with a sense of humor.

The Focus on Children and Young Adults Institute seeks to provide a foundation of professional knowledge about youth services necessary for the operation of small, rural public libraries in Oregon.  Participants are expected to attend all 10 training sessions over the course of three days (see schedule below).  The sessions concentrate on the principles of public library services to children and teens, and how to put those principles into practice.  Session topics may change from year to year based on research, library practices, and trends which change and improve continually.  Feedback from the previous Focus Institute participants is also considered when planning session topics.  Training sessions are presented by highly skilled, experienced Youth Services Librarians in Oregon.  Presenters are typically active members of the Oregon Library Association's Children's Services Division<http://www.csdola.org/> (CSD) and Oregon Young Adult Network<http://www.olaweb.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=289> (OYAN).

 Observations from Oregon

My coworker, Arlene Weible, wrote this blog post<https://acrloregon.org/2016/07/05/college-readiness-and-library-research-skills-observations-from-oregon/> for ACRL-Oregon about what Oregon academic librarians see first-year students struggle with when it comes to research. Many of you already do or are trying to start integrating more information literacy skills development into your public library programs. This article may give you some ideas about which skills to focus on.

Here are just a couple things that stood out to me as things public library staff can help children and teens learn:

?         I have had students write in an assignment, ?books won?t have the information I need,? because they think all books are fiction. This is rare (happened twice).

?         Students don?t know what databases are, or even what journals are.

?         They do know they should not use Wikipedia as a source, but they don?t always know why.

?         They don?t understand the vocabulary of information. Not jargon, but even basic things like the difference between print and digital?

Here are two ideas we might steal:

?         I talk to freshman about how using library resources online is their invitation into a part of the invisible web that they now have access to for the first time? which intrigues them

?         You?d be surprised how often just typing your thesis statement into EBSCO or Gale (without quotes) is an excellent search strategy!?

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) just released a new version of their technology standards for students.

The 2016 edition divides the standards into 7 categories: Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. Each standard has 4 indicators. Hover over or click on underlined words in the indicators to see definitions or examples.

All of the standards relate to library instructional programs to some degree. Direct information literacy or research skills fall under Knowledge Constructor:


3. Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
3a: Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits.

Sunday evening my family took a walk to our neighborhood park. It?s not unusual to see families out and about riding bikes or walking dogs, but this past weekend the parks have been full of people staring at their phones. Pokemon Go has taken over my community. I?ve never seen our park so busy! There were around 300 people out walking around the playing this game. If you?ve been on social media at all in the past few days, you have most likely have seen many mentions of Pokemon Go from the good-it?s getting people out and walking, to the bad-people are spending a lot of time staring at screens and not paying attention to their surroundings.

So what is Pokemon Go?
Pokemon Go is a free app that has players walking around their communities to find Pokemon in the real world. The game enables Augmented Reality which means the Pokemon can appear in ?real life?. The more Pokemon you catch, the more you can level up and earn experience points all of which can help you battle for gym domination.

Why should libraries care about Pokemon Go?

Pokemon Go is a great social game and getting people out and moving! In order to find Pokemon, you have to walk around and visit various places in your community. You also need to stock up on supplies, which you can do at Pokestops, which many libraries are. Some libraries are even lucky enough to be a gym, which means even more people coming through your doors as these are places everyone is after! This is where you can battle Pokemon and gain more points. Libraries are already doing some great publicity and capitalizing on the games success.

Several libraries are taking advantage the fact that they are Pokestops. People have to be visiting your location to take advantage of the supplies offered in the game, so why not promote that and encourage them to  come in from the parking lot? That?s exactly what Aluchua County Library did when they decided to drop a lure (a special item that brings Pokemon to your location for a short time). While there, encourage everyone to  stop in, sign up for Summer Reading, and get a library card! We?re going to try this today at my library and we?re planning on setting up a table by our front door to greet Pokemon trainers (what players are called in the game), promote our Summer Reading Program and events. You can also provide some special giveaway if possible to Pokemon trainers or if you?re a gym, create some small gym badges and offer those to anyone who conquers your location.

You can even take things one step further like the Farmers Branch Manske Library and set up an impromptu Pokemon hunting party. This could be around your branch, or if you have other locations nearby, like this library, you can go out walking.

There are also numerous passive activities you can do with Pokemon Go. To go with our life size game day this past weekend, we put out a Pokemon craft station for kids to decorate Pokeballs and their own custom Pokemon card.

We also made a passive display in our window asking patrons to let us know what Pokemon they caught in the library.

I?ve also seen libraries asking what team patrons have chosen and you can put up displays asking about favorite Pokemon, Pokestops, or tips and tricks for the game. You can make pixel Pokeballs and there are tons of craft activity ideas from birthday parties that can easily be adapted to libraries. As the game continues on, libraries can be a gathering place for sharing tips about the game and a trading location when trading becomes available. Eventually the possibility to battle anywhere may also become available making the library a great programming spot for virtual Pokemon Battles.

Why does this matter to libraries other than being part of a pop culture phenomenon? As I mentioned, we hosted a life size game day on Saturday which happened to be perfect timing with the Pokemon Go launch. I added a promotion of Pokemon Go to the event, all of my staff and I talked up the game to our patrons, asked if they were playing and we quickly created some passive crafts and displays.

As I was talking the game up to some of our patrons, one family got especially excited. The kids had recently discovered Pokemon and the idea of catching them in real life sounded like so much fun. I showed them how to play and then went back to  the program. Two hours later the mom came up to the desk and said thank you for showing her the game. She mentioned her child had a disorder that made it difficult to process fat and that her child needed to be active but this was always a struggle as her handicap made this difficult. She mentioned that her child loved Pokemon and had been walking around the library all morning catching Pokemon and that normally she would be hearing complaints by now but her child was happily staying active. By providing a place to play the game, creating a partnership between Pokemon Go and the library and being excited about this pop culture event, we helped make this story possible for this family. And that?s exactly why libraries should be taking part in Pokemon Go.

Subject: [OYAN] Oregon public library summer food sites--great work!

This year 29 Oregon public libraries are summer food sites, that is double compared to last year! Even more libraries are bringing their summer reading program to summer food sites or coordinating their schedule with a nearby food site to make summer learning and food available to more underserved youth than previous years. This is hard, but very important work!

Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon highlight one of your success stories on their blog. I thought you might enjoy reading about Stanfield Public Library's summer reading and food program<https://oregonhunger.org/blog/stanfield-public-library-summer-meals>. The article also includes advice for folks who are considering becoming a first-time summer food site next year. Stanfield is the first public library to also be a food site sponsor, meaning they have to buy and prepare the food themselves. Most libraries are food sites with an outside sponsor who does that for them and delivers the prepared food to the library.

Subject: [OYAN] SuperQuest training (computer science training)

Hi Oregon libraries,

I wanted to pass along some information. I went to a SuperQuest training here in Central Oregon last week and learned how to do basic block coding to make apps (using MIT's App Inventor). It was a well done course and I plan on using it for fall teen programming. They have upcoming trainings throughout the state with a variety of topics. And did I mention: it's free! It's marketed towards teachers, but we library folk were welcomed with open arms. Here's a link<http://oregoncsta.org/superquest/> with more information. The upcoming trainings are in Newport, Eugene, and White City (Southern Oregon). They'll also have another round next summer if you missed the one in your community this year.

The Focus on Children and Young Adults Institute seeks to provide a foundation of professional knowledge about youth services necessary for the operation of small, rural public libraries in Oregon.  Participants are expected to attend all 10 training sessions over the course of three days (see schedule below).  The sessions concentrate on the principles of public library services to children and teens, and how to put those principles into practice.  Session topics may change from year to year based on research, library practices, and trends which change and improve continually.  Feedback from the previous Focus Institute participants is also considered when planning session topics.  Training sessions are presented by highly skilled, experienced Youth Services Librarians in Oregon.  Presenters are typically active members of the Oregon Library Association's Children's Services Division<http://www.csdola.org/> (CSD) and Oregon Young Adult Network<http://www.olaweb.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=289> (OYAN).

Participation in the Focus Institute is limited to 25 people, thus registration is somewhat competitive. You will be notified by August 5th if you have been accepted or put on the waiting list.

Hi everyone!

I recently moved to Oregon to be the youth librarian here in St. Helens,
and while I've worked with teens before, this is my first experience doing
all of birth through 18, so as we start to plan for next year's summer
stuff, I'm interested in what others are doing.

Who out there is doing Summer Learning this year? What does it look like at
your library? Does the learning mostly come through in your programs, or
does your club/reading log/contest also include something learning-ish?

Bonus question: how do you partner with other community organizations over
the summer?

I know these questions are both broad and also kinda 101, but I'm
interested in the library landscape in Oregon, and I'm curious about what
smaller libraries especially do, so thanks a lot for your help!

UX in Oregon Libraries

The fall issue of OLA Quarterly is dedicated to exploring user experience practices in Oregon libraries. By user experience, we mean looking at the whole of a user's experience with a library as well as the human-computer interaction. What are you doing in your library to enhance the user's experience? What tools is your library using or experimenting with? How do you assess the user experience? What has worked and what hasn't worked? This issue is about the state of user experience in Oregon libraries.

The fall issue guest editor is Joe Marquez. He is the Web Services librarian at the Reed College Library.

If you are interested in writing for OLA-Q, please submit your ideas (title and a brief description) via email to the guest editor for review. The guest editor will review submissions and respond to all authors in a timely manner. He can be reached at jmarquez at reed.edu<mailto:jmarquez at reed.edu>. Please add "OLA-Q" in the subject line of your email.

Deadlines: All ideas for articles are due by August 15. If your idea is selected, final drafts of articles will be required by October 15. The fall issue will be out on November 15.

The article length averages 1,000 to 2,500 words. OLAQ authors retain the rights to their articles, and some have gone on to publish in magazines such as American Libraries.
