Please pardon the cross-posting. I also posted a version of this on the OASL listserv.

Hi,

State Library staff have tracked the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) licensed school librarians employed in Oregon public schools since the 1980-81 school year. Recently we also started tracking the number of FTE school library support (classified) staff. For figures and two charts related to the 37-year span, see the attached PDF.

Here is a brief snapshot. Unfortunately, since the increase in school library staffing for the 2015-16 school year, staffing totals have been trending down again.

The data comes from the Oregon Department of Education (ODE). Often some of the staffing information can be found in the Oregon Statewide Annual Report Card<http://clicks.memberclicks-mail.net/wf/click?upn=GiNS3EeeDL3eSGl5A0wuDcuS5pQB1rcFkJ4BfBMf5P6Wnhs9wpIz5IFjmrVp5CchIuHdrGrqFOc4eA41ljT2bPiKfBqMqfinBF4GJ4yShtpwhVPcSN6jSb93ZVD4sAkUMZiL-2Bzp6GAdC1Ovsn2tTWA-3D-3D_cthq0z3adJO3eRdfaqambligC7nDaI0TdQox-2FrFVazfBgs98R0eahCjA8XBFR2wlDUZVKcPxf7cjl4PZP3TkWwaMSPbpFbCNYDlgZvk7Ui7MKKnOeIrIQ-2FcmGAnhIqcBIzid-2FR5sGpXS9utnsgsaturaDYzWfzEcCcshorfIyv2CQJOHTybjSWTecKsC6t-2FYe8uJtj2dGaKqSmGIVB37LC1ODfk7qj6cMDVL2yPe1dJIEhjmFRoC1-2FwcO0NjeJf70FGFQRR0KrnksFDBK-2FwllOtDChdkadN5YLa4IGbskqqGMaGYV-2FiTyLjqKfkqEMMA4Lt3K0npcPsSYU-2Bt5iJFlg-3D-3D> or in the “Facts” section at the very end of the Oregon School Directory<http://clicks.memberclicks-mail.net/wf/click?upn=GiNS3EeeDL3eSGl5A0wuDcuS5pQB1rcFkJ4BfBMf5P4uEuqMvFgniaA-2BKQ0Qi5UfxfK3F-2FgRWOKOer98Onf-2BQ3iAzqDbs0C5lBd-2BtRLQexY-3D_cthq0z3adJO3eRdfaqambligC7nDaI0TdQox-2FrFVazfBgs98R0eahCjA8XBFR2wlDUZVKcPxf7cjl4PZP3TkWwaMSPbpFbCNYDlgZvk7Ui7MKKnOeIrIQ-2FcmGAnhIqcBIzid-2FR5sGpXS9utnsgsaturaDYzWfzEcCcshorfIyv2CQJOHTybjSWTecKsC6t-2FYXOKbUIfHUlQMqw-2FcZeXubGN-2FMr-2FG1zboRxwIJW1aJRVXHwtrRESbPxAIEeeJrNMUenZvjCGEsl4gyB6ctel8U2QFEYuZP1xQbhOkERxBvAV65xKmGIv8nA0J7kXqWKte5q6-2BDKpWOia2Fz4BqVyVNw-3D-3D>. I ask ODE staff to fill in any gaps and to verify numbers.

See p. 13 of the 2017-18 report card<http://clicks.memberclicks-mail.net/wf/click?upn=GiNS3EeeDL3eSGl5A0wuDcuS5pQB1rcFkJ4BfBMf5P6Wnhs9wpIz5IFjmrVp5CchIuHdrGrqFOc4eA41ljT2bDREZNiOwzmxUc-2Bugn2YX-2BlKY30oi2JaB-2FpkEaJYafXR_cthq0z3adJO3eRdfaqambligC7nDaI0TdQox-2FrFVazfBgs98R0eahCjA8XBFR2wlDUZVKcPxf7cjl4PZP3TkWwaMSPbpFbCNYDlgZvk7Ui7MKKnOeIrIQ-2FcmGAnhIqcBIzid-2FR5sGpXS9utnsgsaturaDYzWfzEcCcshorfIyv2CQJOHTybjSWTecKsC6t-2FYXiib4zbwL8EZ9tUEaBdiu8-2FY-2FRNItltOUtBLlbwmXopuCc0wWKKacFZnpT2IsVRZdnZVhZU5-2BAKxhaOPYz0XhPHcoJS3zmdMRjm6S9R-2Fcf4HgzhSB-2BLl0z7Euw2jod4Kocrb8lqmyBD6sZrfY4OApQ-3D-3D>. Several years ago when we pointed out that it is confusing since ODE separates totals for licensed and classified staff in other categories, ODE added a note to the bottom of the chart instead of separating the totals. In the new At-A-Glance District Profiles<http://clicks.memberclicks-mail.net/wf/click?upn=GiNS3EeeDL3eSGl5A0wuDaFSu55umM7WXvq-2B81v-2B86NM7lhrgZaIDwPuqWUCpA-2FHdspdwU3ql8NzaitI9e9pUg-3D-3D_cthq0z3adJO3eRdfaqambligC7nDaI0TdQox-2FrFVazfBgs98R0eahCjA8XBFR2wlDUZVKcPxf7cjl4PZP3TkWwaMSPbpFbCNYDlgZvk7Ui7MKKnOeIrIQ-2FcmGAnhIqcBIzid-2FR5sGpXS9utnsgsaturaDYzWfzEcCcshorfIyv2CQJOHTybjSWTecKsC6t-2FYVeuK1bJMjFI-2BQPoT2YTnXEjQ5pyZdOOf5RQwXEOuLkKx4A-2B0ABWgDAf3EA-2BzDjiX3pbVQ-2BVlSItw5pUczMB8D3IN77rBm565W5HGU8Y5KTafs7KUQ0MSQx5cJu-2F3-2BM6t-2BCZqtFJfgwAgdpbcS3sDeQ-3D-3D> that were released a few months ago, a combined school library staffing total was labeled as Librarians. ODE received a lot of feedback about how combining library staffing totals without clearly identifying what the number represents does not paint a clear picture about school library programs in Oregon. Last I heard, ODE will most likely address this in next year’s statewide and at-a-glance report cards.

It is my goal to add this information to the School Libraries webpage<http://clicks.memberclicks-mail.net/wf/click?upn=GiNS3EeeDL3eSGl5A0wuDSs6UalD6GO13HU2LJY8RW3ckHdg2xoynXcJg1PJmsR3IqI9aZEG-2FF82C7140mfDqPRaQpeySeOTEaIjcpLnnaw-3D_cthq0z3adJO3eRdfaqambligC7nDaI0TdQox-2FrFVazfBgs98R0eahCjA8XBFR2wlDUZVKcPxf7cjl4PZP3TkWwaMSPbpFbCNYDlgZvk7Ui7MKKnOeIrIQ-2FcmGAnhIqcBIzid-2FR5sGpXS9utnsgsaturaDYzWfzEcCcshorfIyv2CQJOHTybjSWTecKsC6t-2FY6RLc7NqeDEwnkhgQBRzcRitvhC-2BIVLKTuVEpeEKLWVjlnhZzdnELQZM2IBPQksKnluL6mcOXUyhKbn4UJ-2FXEceHeY6Lw0LBzHu9bwbgxveUTIul9gW-2F1Dl-2F4-2FFaYLY6aN6RoAlgGCwP6iM-2Ff64I7Wg-3D-3D> of the State Library’s website within a week.

Questions? Please ask.
