[PL-Directors] Reminder: Gates Foundation Transition Seminars, Dec. 1, 2 and 4

Ralph Buchan from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Technical 
Support Team will be conducting seminar presentations for librarians and 
technical support staff the week of December 1st. There is no need to
register; please contact Pam Horan if you have questionsfor the
presentations.


The seminars will offer transition information for libraries as technical support from the 
Gates Foundation library program grants comes to an end. All 
presentations will be 10:00am-3:00pm PT with an hour break for lunch 
(lunch will NOT be provided).

The seminar should help ease the transition from the Bill and Melinda 
Gates Foundation support of the granted computers to local support, and 
provide an opportunity to increase your knowledge of Public Access 
Computing.

Topics covered in the seminar include:

An overview of the Gates Granted Computers operating System including:
-Overview of Security, Profiles, Policies and Permissions
-Locking and unlocking the Gates Windows 2000 model
-Adding software, printers and other devices to the Gates Windows 2000 
model
-Known security issues and fixes
-An overview of the Centurion Guard device

Overview of Support Issues with the Gates Granted Computers
-Altering and Repairing Profiles, Policies and Permissions
-Software, known quirks and fixes
-Hardware known quirks and fixes
-Maintaining the Gates Granted Computers:
-Support Resources, Hardware and Software
-Using imaging software

Designing and Supporting Public Access Computers
-An overview of designing and purchasing a public access computer
-Troubleshooting made easy
-Troubleshooting Printers

Moving Forward topics:
-Upgrading software on the Gates Granted Computers
-Upgrading the Hardware on the Gates Granted Computers
-Licensing issues on the Gates Granted Computers
-Re-purposing the Gates Granted Computers and Grant guideline 
considerations
