IMLS Announces New Data Note on Libraries' Role in Providing Broadband Access Washington, DC-The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) today launched a new series of data notes to inform library and museum policies and practices. The first data note, Libraries Use Broadband to Serve High Need Communities, focuses on the role that public libraries play in providing access points to broadband services for people in urban and rural areas, and families in need. To read the data note, please go to: http://www.imls.gov/pdf/DataNote2009_01.pdf. "These publications are part of our overall plan to develop and disseminate short, intermediate, and long-range research projects," said Anne-Imelda M. Radice, IMLS Director. "Our goal is to provide reliable and consistent data on museums and libraries that these institutions can use to help demonstrate public value." Future IMLS Data Notes will provide a concise analysis of existing data on the governance structure of museums; the library workforce; and summer reading programs. IMLS will soon begin releasing IMLS Research Briefs, 4-6 page publications examining issues such as youth services in museums and libraries, museum attendance, circulation and visitation trends in U.S. libraries, and the conservation needs of small museums. The IMLS will continue to support in-depth research reports, such as the recently-released Exhibiting Public Value: Government Funding for Museums in the United States and other program evaluations. They are encouraged to participate in some important work to look at the future role of the Library of Congress in the creation and distribution of bibliographic data. It?s important that the consultants hear from public library stakeholders. I?m sure they would also like to hear from library directors if you are interested in providing input. LC has engaged R2 Consulting, LLC to lead the investigation. The research we are conducting and the eventual outcome of the project could have significant implications for libraries of all types. To keep people informed about the progress of our work, and to get input from catalogers and cataloging coordinators, we have constructed a social networking site at: http://bibrecords.ning.com/ We have been promoting the site for several weeks now, but have failed to attract significant numbers from the public and school library communities. We are contacting you now with the hope that you will help us get the word out to technical services departments and catalogers in your state. We want them to join our network so that they are aware of the project, so that they can communicate their needs and interests, and so that we can easily invite them to participate in our online survey next month. So again: http://bibrecords.ning.com/ Thanks in advance for whatever support you can offer and if you have questions, please don?t hesitate to be back in touch.
