With declining fertility rates and longer life expectances, a significant and long term change in U.S. population demographics is now underway. This ?aging? trend is expected to continue well into the 2080s. To stay relevant, libraries will need to rethink how to interact with this older, adult society. The California State Library, Idaho Commission for Libraries, Oregon State Library, and Washington State Library have partnered to offer a year-long Fellowship that will provide continuing education scholarships on this topic for selected public library staff and professionals. Funded by a grant from the U.S. Institute for Museum and Library Services, Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program, up to 100 qualified applicants will be selected to participate. Fellows will be introduced to a new framework for serving and engaging adults ages 50+ that both promotes productive aging and establishes libraries as centers of lifelong learning and civic engagement. For more information about this Fellowship and a link to the online application, go to: http://www.transforminglifeafter50.org/innovators/imls-fellowship. The Fellowship will run from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011. Deadline for submission, including a Letter of Library Commitment, is April 2, 2010. Selection of Fellows will be announced June 1, 2010. Their application will propose to provide free broadband connections to libraries in their service area (purportedly most rural areas of the state). I wanted you to know that the State Library has already sent them a letter of endorsement. I consulted with my contact at the Oregon Public Utilities Commission and he did not see any downside to sending them a letter. A copy of our letter is attached. You will need to decide what, if anything, you want to do about this, if you have been contacted. I just wanted you to know what we have done about it. Let me know if you have questions about this.
