NO-COST FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC LIBRARY STAFF

APRIL 2nd DEADLINE APPROACHING

The Oregon State Library, working with state libraries in our neighboring
states, was successful in getting a Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian
Program grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services that fully
funds 100 library staff to learn about improving library services to, and
engaging with, active, older adults. ³Transforming Life After 50² will
introduce the participants to a new framework for serving and engaging
adults aged 50+. By participating in the program, library staff can
establish their libraries as centers of lifelong learning and civic
engagement.

A minimum time commitment of 75 hours (including 24 training hours at the
institute) is anticipated to meet the year-long Fellowship participation
requirements. Successful applicants will receive full scholarships which
cover Fellowship tuition, and room and board for the training institute in
Portland, September 15-17. Fellows will also be reimbursed for all travel
expenses to and from the institute.

Don¹t miss out on this unique opportunity for you or your staff to advance
your library and information science skills related to improving services to
and engagement with active, older adults. With declining fertility rates
and longer life expectances, a significant and long term change in U.S.
population demographics is now underway. This ³aging² trend is expected to
continue well into the 2080s. To stay relevant, libraries will need to
rethink how to interact with this older, adult society.

The Fellowship will run from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011. Deadline
for submission, including a Letter of Library Commitment, is April 2, 2010.
Selection of Fellows will be announced June 1, 2010.
