In accordance with ORS 357.520, the State Library is once again requesting your help with reporting library statistics for the 2010-11 fiscal year. Oregon law requires that every public library report annually to the State Library. The Statistical Report is due October 1, 2011. We will be using Bibliostat Collect again for the Oregon Public Library Statistical Report. You will be receiving a mailing from the State Library this week. Note that the URL for Bibliostat is now http://collect.btol.com/, so be sure to update any bookmarks. I did not change library user names or passwords from last year. If you have your user name and password from last year, you can start on the survey now. I've already heard from several libraries jockeying for first filer status! The Frequently Asked Questions site, and more information are available through the "Reporting Public Library Statistics" page via: http://oregon.gov/OSL/LD/statsmain.shtml. I'll be adding some of your questions from last time to the FAQ this week. Section 12 is the only new piece this year, but the good news is that it's for State Library use only and finally shows codes we use with the Federal Government. I will be doing a head-to-toe survey walkthrough Wednesday August 17, from 10am-12pm at Chemeketa Community College, Building 9, room 112 for any that wish to come. Whatever you do, pick up the phone and call for help early and often! I can also do workshops or individual training sessions. Don't hesitate; please call or email me at (503) 378-5027 or ann.reed at state.or.us. If there are problems with the functioning of the software, call Bibliostat directly at 1-866-785-9935. If your library is unable to meet the October 1 deadline, a deadline extension must be requested from Library Development Services. The extension request must be sent to Library Development on or before September 23, 2011. If the extension is granted, we will set a new deadline to complete the statistical report. The extension request may be submitted to Library Development Services via email to Ferol Weyand at ferol.weyand at state.or.us or via fax at 503-378-6439. Call for help early and often! 503-378-5027 Yours, Ann Reed Ann Reed, Federal Programs Coordinator Library Development Services Oregon State Library 250 Winter St. Salem, OR 97301 (503) 378-5027 fax (503) 378-6439 ann.reed at state.or.us -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Through the survey website, public libraries will also benefit from new advocacy tools, including video instruction, to help them communicate the value of public access technology to policy makers. The University is currently recruiting 400-600 library systems nationwide to participate in a pilot of the survey tool and supporting materials. Pilot libraries will receive support throughout their involvement and will be asked to provide feedback via survey. A sample of pilot libraries will be asked to participate in a follow-up interview. Participating libraries will begin their flexible 2 to 4-week survey fielding period by September 12th. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to both evaluate and demonstrate the impact of providing public access technology services in your community. You may register your library for the pilot by creating an account at http://impactsurvey.org . For more information, please visit http://impactsurvey.org or contact the survey coordinator at info at impactsurvey.org or (206) 543-4324. Thank you for your leadership. About the U.S. IMPACT Study Conducted in 2009, the U.S. IMPACT Study was the first large-scale investigation of the ways library patrons use computers and the Internet at public libraries, why they use it, and how it affects their lives. The study consisted of 4 case studies, a national telephone survey, and an online survey designed to supplement the telephone survey and ensure that PAC (public access computing) users from all walks of life were represented. Over 400 libraries participated in the online survey, which yielded 45,000 responses. The study was instrumental in providing evidence that access to the Internet at U.S. public libraries has a profound and measurable impact on individuals and communities. The study?s second report, Opportunity for All: How Library Policies and Practices Impact Public Internet Access was released in June of 2011. -- Cortney Leach, MPA, MLIS Research Analyst | IMPACT Team | University of Washington Information School Community Consultant | COSLA Public Access Technology Community of Practice ------ End of Forwarded Message -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Bibliostat is running a bit slow today with some hiccups as the New Jersey HQ of Bibliostat is impacted by flood damage from Irene. The program is using a backup server in another eastern state. Many phone lines are down in NJ, and Bibliostat is unable to answer their phone at this time. I'll update you when they return to a normal speed and have phone availability again.
