From marykay.dahlgreen at state.or.us Tue Sep 6 11:31:53 2011 From: marykay.dahlgreen at state.or.us (MaryKay Dahlgreen) Date: Tue, 6 Sep 2011 18:31:53 +0000 Subject: [PL-Directors] Workforce Development Training "Project Compass" Message-ID: Dear colleagues: This three session on-line workshop is nearly the same as the one day in-person training we had in Tigard and Pendleton earlier this year. We had scheduled in-person sessions for three other locations but due to low registration we cancelled those. My guess is that sending a staff member to an all day training was difficult for most of your libraries so we have arranged to present the training in three sessions o- line beginning at the end of September. Our in-person trainings were most ably accomplished by Kathy Smith and Charles Dunham from the Tigard Library. For the on-line sessions we have invited Linda Bruno, an experienced online and Project Compass trainer, to be our trainer. I have attached an invitation from Linda to this e-mail and below is a short description of the training. Please think about members of your staff (or yourself) who might benefit from this training. Library staff are often first responders to our community members' needs for job-seeking assistance, ranging from unemployment services to filling out online applications to starting a small business. Yet during these tough times, increased demand often outstrips our ability to deliver effective resources and services. Join us for three online Project Compass sessions, where you will gain real-world success stories and build a foundation of skills to help you create and build programs and services for workforce recovery. Together we will discuss best practices for programs and services for job seekers and local business development, building partnerships with your local workforce agency, and providing financial literacy and technology training. The three sessions will be held on Thursdays: September 29th, October 13th and October 20th. Each session will be 1.5 hours, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. You must register to attend these online sessions, information on connecting to the webinars will be sent out to registrants the week before the first session. Participants will also receive a workbook in the mail prior to the first session. To register please go to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Y79LQ8Y If you have questions please contact MaryKay Dahlgreen marykay.dahlgreen at state.or.us MaryKay Dahlgreen Library Development Program Manager Oregon State Library 503-378-5012 marykay.dahlgreen at state.or.us -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The American Library Association, the Public Library Association and American Public Media are the national sponsors of this project. LibrariUS will provide your library users with the opportunity to give feedback on your library via a widget on your website. We are taking the liberty of adding the LibrariUS widget to all of the Plinkit websites over the next few weeks. But if you have a Plinkit website and would prefer not to participate in LibrariUS, just let Darci Hanning know and she will remove the widget. Below is more information from our partner, Amanda Peacher, at Oregon Public Broadcasting. If you don?t have a Plinkit website, the widget you can use on your website to participate in LibrariUS is attached. Please contact Amanda with your questions about LibrariUS. I will appreciate your consideration of this opportunity. Jim Scheppke, State Librarian Oregon State Library ************** >From Amanda Peacher at Oregon Public Broadcasting: Oregon Public Broadcasting is pleased to be partnering with the Oregon State Library on an outreach project to collect stories about how library patrons and staff across the state are using their libraries. We think that this will be a very positive and beneficial partnership, and we?re hoping that your library will participate. The project is called called LibrariUS (/ly-BREHR?-ee-uhs?/), and its purpose is to explore the information, civic and social needs of communities across the nation, through the lens of local libraries. OPB and the State Library are heading this effort in Oregon; nationally, this project is led by American Public Media, the ALA and the Public Library Association. You can have a look at the national website for the project here: http://www.publicinsightnetwork.org/librarius/ Here?s how it works: Libraries embed the LibrariUS widget on their website that asks patrons to answer this simple question: How are you using the library today? When people respond, their story gets mapped on the LibrariUS website. Here at OPB, I read their responses as they come in, and then I follow up with people on stories we?d like to report on. I will also compile responses and provide them to each library. For libraries, LibrariUS is a way to learn more about what people are doing at the library with personal narratives (not just statistics) to help demonstrate how you are serving your community ? in traditional and new ways ? and to get more stories about libraries in the news. It?s also an opportunity to help your patrons tell their own stories, and have a greater voice in the media. Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions. In order to participate, all your library needs to do is embed the LibrariUS widget on your homepage (or some other visible place on your site) and then let me know that you?ve done so. As of now, there?s not a sunset date for the project, and you can keep the widget up for as long or little as suits your needs. A few Oregon libraries have already agreed to participate, so please feel free to check out how the widget looks on their websites: * Baker County Library: http://bakerlib.org/ * Harney County Library: http://www.harneycountylibrary.org/ I?ve attached the basic FAQ sheet that answers questions about how patron?s stories and information will be used by OPB, and also another document with the embedding codes for the widget. Again, OPB and the Oregon State Library are excited for this partnership, and we hope that you?ll participate. You may be hearing from me again as I follow up with various libraries individually, but please feel free to get in touch with questions. Message-ID: The Oregon State Library and OSU Libraries are very excited to announce a soft launch of the Libraries of Oregon website http://www.librariesoforegon.org on September 13, 2011. This project is the outgrowth of a State Library Board initiative to extend library services to unserved Oregonians. While the Board is especially interested in serving the unserved, the project steering committee was also very concerned that Oregonians who do have tax-supported library service be knowledgeable about their local tax supported library and the services they offer. The Libraries of Oregon website will provide three things to Oregonians: access to federally funded (LSTA) online databases that are purchased for the whole state by the State Library; a library locator for those Oregonians who don't know where their nearest local library is located; and general information available via the web, including outstanding websites, ask-a-librarian service, and other online information sources. This soft launch is in anticipation of a official launch on October 3, 2011 and we need your help to make that launch, and the entire website successful. Over the next several weeks please visit the Libraries of Oregon http://www.librariesoforegon.org website and poke around. A couple of features are yet to come We will be putting together library advocacy information, with the help of local libraries, that citizens can go to if they are living in an area without tax supported library service. We will also be adding more websites to the tabs on the home page. We would like any feedback you have about the site; MaryKay Dahlgreen marykay.dahlgreen at state.or.us, Terry Reese terry.reese at oregonstate.edu or Darci Hanning Darci.hanning at state.or.us Terry has this specific request for feedback:- 1) how the Gale pass thru looks (and how it works around the borders of the state - like in the Dalles or Hood River) and 2) there is a link under the search box when State wide databases is selected that links you to about 50 free databases. This is a comprehensive list one of the subject selectors maintains at OSU. We could pull that data directly into the Libraries of Oregon or link out. I'm curious how to make sure this information doesn't get lost. When we officially launch the site in early October the State Library and OSU Libraries will be working together to provide information to the media and communities that do not have tax supported library service. We will also be sending materials to libraries that are adjacent to unserved areas so they can share this resource with those citizens who don't pay taxes for library service. We hope to provide some sort of reminder item (bookmark, magnet, pencil) that will have the URL but would like your ideas on promoting this service as well. This website is not static and we hope very much to continue to improve and expand the resources offered. There were several people who helped steer the development of the website and we are hoping that we can create an advisory committee that will steer the expansion and improvement of the website. If you are interested in serving on an advisory committee please contact MaryKay Dahlgreen marykay.dahlgreen at state.or.us Thanks again for your interest and feedback as we launch this new opportunity to improve library service for all Oregonians. The University of Washington, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is extending the benefits of the 2009 U.S. IMPACT Study patron web survey by making it available for public libraries to use in their own public access technology data collection, evaluation, and advocacy efforts. The UW is recruiting 400 library systems nationwide to pilot a web portal where libraries can easily connect to the survey and use it whenever they want to evaluate their public access services. Instead of programming, collecting, analyzing your own survey, and having to write your own reports, the new UW system will do all this for you, automatically! They have extended the original enrollment deadline, now asking that pilot libraries start their flexible 2-4 week survey fielding period no later than September 26th. As a pilot library, you will receive a full-color, ready-for-distribution report immediately after running the survey. The UW has also developed new advocacy tools through the survey website, including video instruction, to help you use the survey results to communicate with funders and other policy makers in your community. Pilot libraries will receive technical support throughout their involvement and given an opportunity to provide feedback on the process and support materials. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to evaluate impact of providing public access technology in your community and to help the University of Washington develop this tool for all libraries to use for years to come. You may register your library for the pilot by creating an account at http://impactsurvey.org . For more information, please visit http://impactsurvey.org or contact the survey coordinator at info at impactsurvey.org or (206) 543-4324 . Thank you for your help with this important project. About the U.S. IMPACT Study Conducted in 2009, the U.S. IMPACT Study was the first large-scale investigation of the ways library patrons use computers and the Internet at public libraries, why they use it, and how it affects their lives. The study consisted of 4 case studies, a national telephone survey, and an online survey designed to supplement the telephone survey and ensure that PAC (public access computing) users from all walks of life were represented. Over 400 libraries participated in the online survey, which yielded 45,000 responses. The study was instrumental in providing evidence that access to the Internet at U.S. public libraries has a profound and measurable impact on individuals and communities. The study?s second report, Opportunity for All: How Library Policies and Practices Impact Public Internet Access was released in June of 2011. ------ End of Forwarded Message -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
