From: Darci Hanning Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2012 12:24 PM To: pl-directors at listsmart.osl.state.or.us Subject: Accepting comments on the Draft ALA OITP Digital Literacy Report - Sept 18-Oct 19, 2012 Greetings, Please see the information below regarding the latest activities by the Digital Literacy Task Force; your comments are wanted on the current draft report: Overview of the comment period goals The OITP (Office for Information Technology Policy) Digital Literacy Task Force is pleased to share this preliminary report and is seeking feedback from across the profession on this draft. The report provides a broad overview of libraries and digital literacy. It discusses the current policy context, including digital inclusion, education, life-long learning, and workforce development. The report outlines library-specific issues and opportunities. It reaffirms the need for traditional, text-based literacy in reading and writing as a foundation for other literacies. Finally, the report serves as a launching point for the development of a set of recommendations to the Association and the broader library community to continue and expand libraries' engagement and leadership to effect meaningful and sustainable change in our communities. The Task Force will develop these recommendations as a companion piece to this report. As you review the draft, please focus your feedback on substantive issues. Specifically, the task force asks representatives of each library type to consider how your library is portrayed. Are the examples demonstrative of the work you do? Are the issues that are most important to you and your colleagues addressed? Please provide comments that in turn provide the task force with enough information to effectively address your suggestions or concerns. How to comment When you open the report you will notice that each paragraph is numbered: [para 1], [para 2], and so on. To ensure that we can track each comment, please refer to the page number and the paragraph number at the beginning of your comment. Please do this for each section you wish to comment on. Please use the comment option below to submit your comments. Task Force members will review each comment when the public comment period is over. Please do not submit line edits. Prior to publication we will have a copy editor review the final draft version. At that time endnotes will be formatted in APA style. If you have a clarifying question, please send an email to mvisser at alawash.org. Thank you for your help and insights to this work. The comment period is open from September 18 to October 19, 2012. The SRP brief is a compilation of data that Oregon public libraries reported this September via the Summer Reading Statistics and Ordering Survey. The SRP brief provides a picture of summer reading participation in Oregon. Based on requests from several libraries, the State Library is now publishing the Summer Reading Statistics Spreadsheet. This allows you to compare participation in summer reading at your library to similar libraries in Oregon. In addition, I included the population of children 0-14 years old from the 2012-2013 Ready to Read Grant list and calculated the % of those children who signed-up and finished so you can get a better idea of the reach your program has in your community. This year I have also added two additional pages to the 2012 Summer Reading Statistics Spreadsheet because libraries cannot print the statistics and orders they submit via the survey. * To view the order your library placed for summer reading certificates, sweepstakes materials, and summer reading manuals open the 2012 Oregon Summer Reading Statistics Spreadsheet by clicking on 'excel.xls' and clicking on the 'Orders Placed for future SRP' tab along the bottom of the page. * To view information about how you and other libraries run summer reading programs open the 2012 Oregon Summer Reading Statistics Spreadsheet by clicking on 'excel.xls' and clicking on the '2012 SRP Details' tab along the bottom of the page. Attached is a template you may use to create a summer reading brief specific to your library's summer reading statistics and personal success stories. Your library's summer reading brief may be useful for your library board, city council, board of commissioners, and other key stakeholders in your community.
