Passing along this new resource from the IMLS: http://blog.imls.gov/?p=5044 Chances are good that someone you know has been scammed. They might not talk about it, but the statistics show attempted scamming is common. Libraries are an important source to computers and digital literacy training helping seniors connect with family, friends, health information and government services. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) works to prevent fraud and deceptive business practices. Its new initiative, Pass It On, was designed to help seniors teach their peers how to avoid scams, rip-offs, and identity theft with materials in English and Spanish that librarians can download, order in bulk, and distribute to their customers. Pass It On reinforces what older adults already know, gives them the tools to start a conversation, and asks them to pass it on. The materials are respectful of older adults, and view them as part of the solution. On the site, you?ll find: * one-page fact sheets on six issues often seen by older adults: imposter scams, identity theft, charity fraud, health care scams, paying too much, and ?you?ve won? scams; * bookmarks on all those topics, to serve as reminders of what to do; * activities to print and use; * a video to encourage people to pass it on; * and, coming soon, presentations on each of the topics. You?ll also find a link to order the materials for free and in large quantities. You can order a folder with materials on all the issues in one place, an issue at a time in a tear-off pad of fact sheets, or a brick of bookmarks. If you have questions, ideas on other issues to cover, or other resources that would help you, please feel free to contact the FTC at PassItOn at ftc.gov. Cheers! The State Library recently sent a postal letter to all of you who currently participate in the Statewide Database Licensing Program (SDLP) asking that you review and sign the attached Terms of Use agreement. This agreement specifies how libraries and their authorized users may use the resources in the SDLP. At the suggestion of the Oregon Department of Justice, we will be requiring that each participant sign and return the agreement We are also asking that each library identify a contact person to receive news and updates about SDLP resources. We hope that this will improve our ability to communicate about issues and changes to the program in a timely manner. This is one of what I anticipate will number of changes as we reorganize the library. We have decided that we will no longer staff the reference room here at OSL. There are several reasons why this decision has been made. We have been directed to reorganize the state library for the last couple of years and legislators are expressing increasing frustration with our failure to make substantive changes that will result in improved efficiencies and modernization of the state library services. The use of the reference room by our primary constituency, state agency staff, is very low. It is quite expensive to staff the reference room for 35 hours a week and to pay rent on that space. And finally and probably most importantly, the Government Information and Library Services staff are working to modernize and provide updated library services to state agency staff. Those efforts will take the time and expertise of staff that is currently staffing the reference room. This will allow our Government Information and Library Services Division to target those areas that will provide the most useful and up-to-date information and services to our patrons. One significant impact this will have is that since we will not be staffing the reference room it will no longer be open to the public after October 1, 2015. This will affect our partners, Willamette Valley Genealogical Society, who have volunteers here during our open hours and who hold a program one Saturday a month. I have informed WGVS that since we will no longer be staffing the reference room their operations in the reference room, including once a month Saturday sessions, can no longer be held here. In the next two months we will be discussing our communication strategy as well as how to meet our obligations as a member of the Federal Depository Library Program and to our state agency users who need on site assistance. Thanks to all of you for your support and concern as we have moved through our reorganization/transformation/redesign. The State Library Board will dedicate their next meeting to strategic planning, we have engaged the Corragio Group from Portland to facilitate and consult. I will keep you updated as there is information to share. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns. The IMLS National Leadership Grants for Libraries program invests $12 million annually in projects that improve professional library and archive practice with implications far beyond the grantee institutions. The grants help drive innovation and support projects with national impact. This year, IMLS is adding an additional opportunity to apply for FY 2015 National Leadership Grants for Libraries. IMLS will be accepting applications in October and again in February. For the October deadline we are implementing some changes that will allow the agency to address strategic issues identified in a series of IMLS Focus meetings that were held earlier this year. To make it possible for IMLS to provide feedback to potential applicants before they prepare full proposals, we will be accepting brief preliminary proposals on October 13, 2014 and inviting selected applicants to submit full proposals. Invited full proposals will be due on January 15, 2015. Applicants interested in learning more may participate in our webinars on August 20, at 3:00 PM ET, and (repeated) on September 16, at 3:00 PM ET. For more information about the webinars, see the IMLS Webinar webpage. Last spring, agency leadership traveled to New York, San Francisco and Chicago to convene IMLS Focus, a series of nationally webcasted meetings to explore library trends and opportunities. These interactive events spotlighted the importance of strong libraries to benefit all Americans by providing opportunities for lifelong learning, anchors for community engagement, and access to content. Hundreds of library professionals and representatives of library organizations participated in these meetings nationwide, online and in person, for a rich discussion that captured input to help IMLS focus its approach to supporting innovation in the nation?s libraries. The October 13, 2014, deadline for NLG libraries will focus on the three strategic priorities that were explored in these meetings. * National digital platform, which focuses on key needs, gaps, opportunities, and goals to consider in furthering national digital initiatives * Learning spaces in libraries, which focuses on emerging learning models that can deepen community engagement in libraries, particularly through learning labs, makerspaces, and digital commons * STEM learning in libraries, which focuses on learning for all types of users, with an emphasis on models or practices that serve at-risk youth Timeline at a Glance for October Deadline NLG NLG Libraries: October 13, 2014 Deadline Dates NOFO released August 13, 2014 Preliminary proposals due October 13, 2014 Notification of invitations TBD Full proposal due from invited applicants January 15, 2015 Notification of final decisions Not later than March 15, 2015 Project start date May 1, 2015 For the February deadline, we will not require preliminary proposals. One quirk appears when entering a phone number. An error appears, the entry blank is framed in red, and it is impossible to continue without the error message that phone numbers need 10 digits repeating. Part of the problem is an incompatibility with Internet Explorer version 10 and higher. As you log in, look to the right for a red link to the compatibility view. Follow the instructions as written. If this does not fix the problem, just open the notepad, and leave the phone number in the Federal note. The second quirk is that the survey may insist on having a number for 12.1 Population served, but you may not have permission to enter any data there. Just add a federal note "Ann will fix." Call me if any other software glitches appear, or if you have any questions! Call early, call often!!
