We will do that before a subcommittee of the Joint Ways and Means Committee during the regular Legislative session coming up in 2015. This is a great improvement over the Governor's Recommended Budget for the State Library in 2013-2015. I appreciate all the support the State Library has received from the library community. I will keep you posted as we move through the budget process. Please contact me if you have questions or concerns. Our overall response rate is 26%, and they are looking for a higher response rate from city libraries in particular. I have attached a spreadsheet that includes both the original survey sample, and other libraries that may wish to take the survey so you can see if you have done it. The survey is sponsored by ALA, IMLS, and the Information Policy and Access Center of the University of Maryland. To see how survey data is utilized for policy efforts, check out http://digitalinclusion.umd.edu. The data is used by many national groups in their work to keep libraries in the front of policy debates such as e-rate and broadband. The data produced by the group is attractive and useful. If you can, please help and take the survey. Ignition Grants for Libraries Washington, DC?The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is accepting applications for Sparks! Ignition Grants for Libraries. The application deadline is February 2, 2015. Sparks! Ignition Grants for Libraries are small grants that encourage libraries and archives to prototype and evaluate innovations that result in new tools, products, services, or organizational practices. They enable grantees to undertake activities that involve risk and require them to share project results?whether they succeed or fail?to provide valuable information to the library field and help improve the ways libraries serve their communities. The funding range is from $10,000 to $25,000, and there are no matching requirements. Projects must begin on October 1, November 1, or December 1, 2015. Click here for program guidelines and more information about the funding opportunity. Getting Your Questions Answered IMLS staff members are available by phone and email to discuss general issues relating to the Sparks! Ignition Grants for Libraries program. The deadline is Dec. 19, 2014. A lot of directors indicate that the speed test is really worth the effort. Why participate in the 2014 Digital Inclusion Survey? 1. They've created interactive mapping tools that show both the library's Digital Inclusion impact on its community as well as key community needs in areas of employment, education, health -- and also a range of demographics. City and county managers thought this was a great tool when the project showed it to them at the ICMA conference in October in Charlotte, NC. They are very focused on "quality of life" community indicators, and this tool clearly resonated with them -- and showed the library in a new light as a community anchor. Check it out at: http://digitalinclusion.umd.edu/content/interactive-map. You can also get a state version of the map at http://digitalinclusion.umd.edu/state-details. 2. They've made it easy to leverage data for advocacy at all levels. Issue briefs, state summaries, reports and infographics provide bite-size pieces, context and visual appeal on the topics ranging from digital inclusion writ large to e-government and employment. All these are at http://digitalinclusion.umd.edu/content/analysis. These can be very helpful as legislative sessions get underway. 3. ALA puts the data to work for you and your colleagues. ALA takes these state summaries to senators; uses the data to inform and bolster our policy recommendations, testimony and public comments; and publicizes what has been learned from all of you in media ranging from Fast Company to Governing magazine. 4. The online survey tool is designed for ease of use, and allows you to import last year's data if you've participated before. Please consider helping out.
