From arlene.weible at state.or.us Mon Jan 6 08:09:52 2014 From: arlene.weible at state.or.us (Arlene Weible) Date: Mon, 6 Jan 2014 16:09:52 +0000 Subject: [PL-Directors] Upgrade information for LearningExpress Library - Please Review! Message-ID: <203B0B8CF6665A4B822F17E789DD1AD14276FAD5@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> As we announced in December, LearningExpress Library has upgraded to a new and improved platform. Attached is the list of currently participating libraries and the URL's that can be used to access the new version, LearningExpress Library 3.0. This file is also available at: http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/technology/sdlp/learningexpress/OregonLEL3.0.xls The link that your library is currently using to access Version 2.0 will also remain active through the end of June 2014. The update of LearningExpress Library and the shift to a new platform requires users to re-register their accounts. Accounts from LearningExpress 2.0 will not be carried over to the new version. Users should be encouraged to finish their work in Version 2.0, re-register their account in Version 3.0, and start new work in Version 3.0. In addition, all new content added to LearningExpress Library, including materials for the 2014 GED Test, will only be available in Version 3.0. The State Library recommends that libraries provide links to both Version 2.0 and Version 3.0 simultaneously for a period of time as users transition their work from Version 2.0 to 3.0. You may use the template "splash page" that LearningExpress provides, or you may post the information on your own web site. Please contact LearningExpress customer support if you need assistance with the template or have any questions about your authentication technology. Please be sure to place links behind your authentication page to ensure authorized registration and access. Distributing this link for unauthorized use is strictly prohibited. Here is some suggested language for your library web page: If you were a registered user of LearningExpress Library 2.0 your username and password will not work in Version 3.0. You must register again to access Version 3.0 If you have started a course or test in Version 2.0, you must finish it in Version 2.0. Your work will not transfer to Version 3.0 Please finish all work in your Version 2.0 account by June 30, 2014 [or whatever date you choose to stop providing a link to Version 2.0] The introductory screen to Version 2.0 will have a message beginning in January 2014 that access will only be supported through the end of June 2014. Plinkit Libraries will have links to both versions added to their web sites by January 17, 2014. If you have questions about your Plinkit site, please contact Darci Hanning, 503-378-2527. More information about Version 3.0, including training resources, is available in the FAQ we've created. If you have any other questions about the transition, please don't hesitate to contact me. Oregon State Library. From: Laura Girmscheid [mailto:lgirmscheid at mediasourceinc.com] Sent: Wednesday, January 08, 2014 1:18 PM To: Laura Girmscheid Subject: LJ request for library referenda information Library Journal is collecting information for its annual referenda roundup and we need your help to provide an accurate accounting of 2013's campaigns. Our report of pass/fail results and campaign details will help libraries plan for future ballot measures. Did any public libraries in your state have building or operating referenda on the ballot in the past year (12/01/12 through 11/30/13)? Please reply back with a list of those libraries so we may follow-up with them. If there were no ballot issues in your state last year, a reply back to that effect would be welcome as well. If possible, please forward this email to the appropriate libraries in your state that you know had operating or building measures up for a vote. We are hoping to receive a completed survey about each ballot measure, regardless of whether it passed or failed. Surveys must be completed by January 24. Operating referenda survey link: http://fluidsurveys.com/s/2013operatingreferenda/ Buildings referenda survey link: http://fluidsurveys.com/s/2013buildingreferenda/ Prefer to fill out the survey in Word? The survey documents are attached and can be emailed back to me at lgirmsheid at mediasourceinc.com or faxed to 973-969-9260. Many thanks for your help! I look forward to hearing from you. ~ Laura Laura Girmscheid | Research manager Library Journal 160 Varick St. 11th Floor New York, NY 10013 646-380-0719 lgirmscheid at mediasourceinc.com Email is the best way to reach me! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A link to the 2015 competitive LSTA grant packet will be found on the Oregon State Library main page, as well as the Library Development main page (http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/). The forms are in downloadable Microsoft Word form, as well as pdf, for your convenience. If you need a paper copy of the packet sent to you, or have the files in some other format, please contact Ann Reed at (503) 378-5027 or ann.reed at state.or.us. Brief grant proposals are due at the State Library by 5:00 pm on April 11, 2014. For multi-year grant projects seeking a second or third year of funding, please use the form Appendix D. Grant applications need to be in accordance with the purposes of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) which is summarized in the packet as Appendix A. Many other resources for LSTA grant applicants can be found on the Grants / Aid to Libraries page of the Oregon State Library website (http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/grantmainalt.aspx.) Resources include information about past grants and Library Services and Technology Act Advisory Council minutes. As with the previous year, FFY2015 has a requirement for measuring outcomes of your grant project. The State Library has discontinued its peer evaluation program in favor of outcomes-based evaluation. Grant projects need to be designed so that the impact of the project on the knowledge, skills and abilities of the target population are measurable in some way. This is really doable and fairly easy. Many links to good resources can be found via http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/resources/OBE/obe.aspx and OSL staff are here to help. If you have questions about the Grant Guidelines, LSTA grant program, outcomes-based evaluation or have difficulty downloading a form, please feel free to contact Ann Reed, Federal Programs Coordinator. Ann can be reached at (503) 378-5027, or ann.reed at state.or.us. Some of you may have seen this on the libs-or email discussion list, but I know many directors at our smallest libraries are not on that list and, as indicated in the email below, the American Library Association is highly encouraging small and rural libraries to apply for this grant. Directly below is the email that went out on the Association of Rural and Small Library email discussion list. At the bottom of this email is the information about this grant opportunity. Questions about the grant? Contact the ALA Public Programs Office: 312-280-5045 or 800-545-2433, x 5045 or email: publicprograms at ala.org From: ARSL_Membership [mailto:ARSL_MEMBERSHIP at LISTSERV.AMRMS.COM] Attention rural libraries I had several conversations with representatives from ALA including past president Maureen Sullivan who highly encourage small and rural libraries to apply for this program. This is an initial cohort who will help,ALA develop tools for future cohorts to utilize. They would like to be sure that the tools are well developed for both large and small libraries. I have attended two workshops covering the basics of the Harwood Institute's work with libraries and I have been impressed with their results. Please contact them with any questions. I highly encourage your consideration in applying for this unique opportunity. Andrea Berstler Executive Director Wicomico Public Library Immediate Past President ARSL ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: ALA announces Libraries Transforming Communities Public Innovator Cohort grant opportunity Public libraries invited to apply by March 6 to receive $8,000 grant and 18 months of professional development in community engagement CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office is accepting applications for the Libraries Transforming Communities Public Innovators Cohort, an 18-month, team-based professional development opportunity for public libraries, developed by ALA and the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation. The Libraries Transforming Communities project, made possible through a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, addresses a critical need of the field by developing and distributing new tools, resources and support for librarians to engage with their communities in new ways; strengthens librarians as community leaders and change agents, and strengthens ALA's capacity as a lead library support entity. In April, up to 50 individuals representing teams from 10 public libraries nationally will be selected to participate in the Public Innovators Cohort. Selected libraries will receive: * An $8,000 grant to support Cohort expenses. * An intensive 18-month Public Innovators Cohort experience that will include training and team coaching to develop and implement a community engagement plan. * Cohort training at the intensive three-day Public Innovators Lab, May 20-22, 2014. * Virtual and in-person "innovation space" meetings. * Access to six in-depth distance learning session. * Monthly coaching and peer dialogue calls with a Harwood Institute coach and cohort peers to support implementation work. * Access to publicity and marketing resources to support local-level communications. The Public Innovators Cohort is grounded in the Harwood Institute's approach of "turning outward," which emphasizes shifting the institutional and professional orientation of libraries and librarians from internal to external. Participants will develop and implement a plan for community engagement and learn how to: * Identify community issues rooted in people's shared aspirations; * Strategically share this knowledge with your community to build public will for action; * Develop strategies that align with local context; * Create community conditions that enable change; * Identify the right community partners to work with; and * Develop networks for innovation and learning. Complete guidelines and application instructions can be found at: ala.org/LTC. A conference call for interested applicants will be held at 1 p.m. central time on February 12, 2014. An update on the Libraries Transforming Communities initiative was given by Maureen Sullivan, ALA immediate past president, and Rich Harwood, founder and president of The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation, from 8:30 - 10 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the 2014 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia in PCC 201C. Sullivan and Harwood will share the latest examples of the impact from librarians trained during phase one who are successfully applying the Harwood practice in libraries and within the ALA community. They will also provide details and answer questions about exciting new opportunities for librarians to increase the effectiveness of their library-led community engagement and innovation. ****************************** ALA Public Programs Office www.ala.org/publicprograms publicprograms at ala.org Are you a Programming Librarian? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
