This report provides a landscape of censorship activity in Oregon, and is submitted to ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom to be included in their report on censorship activity in the United States. The Annual Report is also used by librarians, professors, and teachers to help them develop activities for Banned Books Week. The Annual Report is based on challenge reports OIFC receives from all types of Oregon libraries (school, academic, tribal, and public). All libraries are encouraged to report challenges to materials on a voluntary basis. OIFC does not publish names of people, organizations, libraries, schools, colleges/universities, or towns identified in challenge reports. Please submit all challenge reports by July 1, 2014. Submit a separate challenge report for each formal challenge to library materials that occurred at your library between July 1, 2013 and June 31, 2014. A formal challenge is one that goes through your library's reconsideration process and an official decision is made to retain, relocate, reclassify, or remove the challenged item. This information is complied to assist Oregon libraries currently facing a challenge as well as providing information that will help you plan Banned Books Week activities. The Annual Report will tell you what books were challenged in Oregon libraries the previous year. The more libraries reporting challenges to OIFC the better OIFC can help you! Please take time to report challenges to OIFC. The accuracy of OIFC's Annual Report and Title Index to Challenges is directly related to the number of Oregon libraries reporting challenges. To report challenges to materials at your library: 1. Print the attached challenge report form (word.doc and .pdf) or download and print the form at http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/Pages/intellectual.aspx#Report_Challenges_to_the_State_Library. 2. I'm forwarding this on behalf of the Answerland Advisory Board, please pardon any duplication. The board is interested in having directors as well as reference staff serve so if you're interested, please read below: Hello, Answerland is Oregon's statewide reference service, allowing everyone who lives, works and goes to school in Oregon the chance to connect with a librarian by live chat, email or text messaging. Answerland also encourages every library to provide virtual reference services to their community. The Answerland Advisory Board is seeking new members for a 2 year term, starting in Fall 2014. The role of the Answerland Advisory Board is to set the mission, goals, and direction of Answerland, our statewide digital reference service. The board strives for broad representation geographically and by type and size of library. Advisors can come from any Oregon library or related organization and have included library directors, volunteers and every role in a library in between. As you may know, Answerland is in a time of major transition, and now, more than ever, needs enthusiastic and committed leaders to guide the service into the future. Important work will need to be done over the coming year, and beyond, as we seek to transition the service to a sustainable funding model and a new fiscal agent. Now is the time to get involved and help re-shape Answerland and ensure the future of Oregon's statewide virtual reference service! More information about the advisory board can be found at: http://www.answerland.org/advisory-board Meetings are four times a year, at least one in-person, and travel costs can often be reimbursed. If you are interested in serving on the Answerland Advisory Board, send an email by July 8, 2014 to: Jenny Pedersen, jenniferp at deschuteslibrary.org Please describe in about 300 words why you want to be a member of the Answerland Advisory Board. The current board will review applications and decide on new membership. In case you didn't see this on libs-or - the national conference of the Association of Rural and Small Libraries is happening this September in Tacoma, WA. You don't have to be an ARSL member to attend - read below for more information! Cheers, Darci ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Darci Hanning * Technology Development Consultant * Library Development Services Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, OR 97301 503-378-2527 darci.hanning at state.or.us There are only six weeks left to register at the Early Bird rate for the Association for Rural & Small Libraries' annual conference to be held in Tacoma, WA. Registration sold out last year for this event and the conference hotel is already completely booked, so now is the time to be making your decisions! Counting down the first five reasons you should come to Tacoma on September 4th through the 6th! This is what you tell your boss: #10 - Keynote Speaker Daniel Rasmus: Libraries Reimagined! Daniel Rasmus is the futurist whose session our colleague raved about when she returned from the Computers in Library conference. #9 - Pre-conference: Library Tours I could learn about space planning from three very different libraries in the morning: * A modular library built quickly & green which uses the bookstore method to shelve materials. * Or I could see how King County Library, one of the best in the country, builds in flexibility * Check out an exquisitely restored and repurposed Carnegie library Then in the afternoon I could go to Rooms that Rock: practical tips for library space planning. #8 - More Pre-conference: Which do you think I should attend-how to design a literature festival for our community or crafting a successful adult education program? #7 - Which would benefit our community more? Should I attend the Gizmo Garage pre-conference at which I could simultaneously increase my skill level with gadgets and learn about the program or do I need to take the preconference about delivering youth services now that Thelma is retiring? #6 - Keynote Speaker Samantha Becker: You don't have to do it all! Samantha is going to cover that new benchmarking system for technology, The Edge Initiative. It will give us information to use with stakeholders. This is what you tell your family: #10 - Would you like to go hiking Mt Rainier, the snowy volcano which dominates the eastern skyline? #9 - Or should we take a ferryboat ride on scenic Puget Sound? #8 - Which would you prefer? Getting up close and personal with polar bears at the Point Defiance Zoo or enjoying the zip line at Northwest Trek Animal Park? #7 - How about a gondola ride up Crystal Mountain with spectacular views of Mt. Rainier? #6 - Decide between LeMay: America's Car Museum which has a special Mustang review downtown or go ten miles away to the LeMay complete collection which covers acres? NOT CONVINCED YET? STAY TUNED FOR THE LAST FIVE REASONS TO ATTEND! Or check out the website at http://arsl.info/category/conferences/conference-2014/ Have you already made up your mind and are ready to register? https://www.amrms.com/ssl/arsl/membership/Conference/Registration.aspx See you in Tacoma! -- Elizabeth M.
