Results of the survey are used by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Gates Foundation and the American Library Association. Message-ID: It was great seeing so many of you at the Public Library Directors meeting in Hillsboro last week. Thanks for the happy birthday! As I said, Katie and I visited with Kristin Gimble and below is a message that Katie sent to kids-lib with some things we can do to support Oregon's children and families. Governor Kitzhaber recently launched StORytime, a new statewide literacy campaign to encourage families and caregivers to talk, sing, read, and play every day everywhere with their children from birth through third grade. The goal of the campaign is to address barriers that make it difficult for families and caregivers to engage their children in language and literacy activities. The desired outcome of the campaign is that all children will be reading at grade level by third grade. Oregon library staff have the knowledge, experience, and community connections to make StORytime a success, and StORytime is an opportunity for libraries to benefit from statewide storytime marketing and public awareness campaign. What can you do? * Use the StORytime logos, images, and templates for your early literacy and early elementary school age programs just like you would use the Collaborative Summer Library Program clip-art for summer reading, but with no copyright Rules of Use to follow! You can use the art to make your own StORytime t-shirts, tote bags, bookmarks, etc. They have logos with different scenes in the 'O' to represent 5 different regions in Oregon! They'll have Spanish versions soon. * Sign-up to be a StORytime partner and be listed on the StORytime website. Being a StORytime partner may help you develop or strengthen partnerships with your early learning hub, local preschools, schools, and other community organizations. * Like the StORytime facebook page to keep up-to-date on campaign activities and participate in the statewide StORytime conversation. * Start or participate in the conversation in your community about how local organizations and businesses can coordinate early language and literacy resources, services, and programs to implement StORytime in your community. For more information, visit the StORytime website. Garmer A Report of the Aspen Institute Dialogue on Public Libraries October 14, 2014 Rising to the Challenge is the culmination of a year-long exploration and examination of the challenges and opportunities facing communities and their public libraries as society moves deeper into the digital era. It projects a new vision for public libraries and promotes new thinking about libraries, their critical assets, new networked forms and the essential role they now play in providing opportunities for individuals and communities to succeed in an economy and society that reward learning, creativity, innovation and social connection. Specifically, this report is based the work done over the last year, including conversations and explorations with COSLA (Chief Officers of State Library Agencies) members. Rising to the Challenge: Re-Envisioning Public Libraries explores how communities and their public libraries can respond as the digital age increases the demand for high-speed information access, changes in our education systems, innovative job training models and additional community services to help people and communities compete in the new economy. This report also provides key strategies for building strong libraries and communities, and offers a series of action steps for those who are motivated by the Dialogue's vision to get started in their own communities. We are in the final stages of compiling a list of alternatives, both free and low-cost options to assist libraries in transitioning to new web sites. We hope to share these options soon. We are also investigating the feasibility of funding (wholly or in part) a low-cost option for eligible libraries for up to the first 12 months after Plinkit is no longer available. In the next few weeks, Darci Hanning will be sending out a survey link to library directors who are using Plinkit for their web site. It will be very important to respond to the survey if you receive it and even if you no longer are using Plinkit. This will help us size and budget for the transition process. The three-year study, titled Public Libraries as Providers of Digitally Inclusive Services and Resources: Transforming Communities, is funded by a National Leadership Grant award from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The ALA and iPAC are developing resources to enable easy use by public library leaders at the local, state and national levels - including new interactive mapping tools, issues briefs, state reports, info-graphics and more. Links to these tools and to the 2013 Digital Inclusion Survey results can be found at http:www.ala.org/research/digitalinclusion and http://digitalinclusion.umd.edu. Thank you for your help.
