Senator Wyden is a summer learning advocate and is interested in visiting all types of summer learning programs, including public library summer reading programs, while he's home this summer. MaryKay was asked to submit a list of summer reading activities at public libraries to the Senator's office. If you would like Senator Wyden to consider visiting a summer reading activity, program, or event at your library this summer, please send me the following information by the end of the day on Wednesday, July 13th. * The name, date, and time of one summer reading activity, program, or event * One short sentence describing the activity, program, or event * An estimated number of people you think will attend the event (we know this is hard to anticipate so a best guess is fine!) * The name and contact information of the person at your library who Senator Wyden's office should contact to schedule a visit MaryKay and I would like to send a list of public library summer reading programs to Senator Wyden's office by the end of this week. Senator Wyden and his staff will use the list to decide which library or libraries to visit so it isn't guaranteed that he'll actually visit your library if you submit a program. Please let me know if you have any questions. I talked about library resources available at local public libraries and about the Edge initiative. I don't know if any of them will do this but I challenged them to visit their library and talk with the director about the Edge Initiative so I thought I'd better give you all a heads up. If you do get a visit or a phone call I would appreciate hearing about it. Message-ID: <640435851FD7CB4AB3C4BE0D1963BA24649376DA@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> Over thirty libraries want Senator Ron Wyden to visit and provided program information for me to pass on to his office-thank you! You continue to impress me with all the great things you are doing for summer reading. I thought you might like to see what other libraries are doing so I've attached a copy of the list I compiled for Senator Wyden's office. Unfortunately Senator Wyden won't be able to visit all the libraries on the list, but if he does choose to visit your library... here are a couple talking points to consider mentioning during his visit: * Library Services and Technology Act funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services pay for my library's summer reading planning manual and access to other materials we need to implement and promote our summer reading program. [Reminder: The State Library used federal funds to pay for your library's membership in the national Collaborative Summer Library Program and for your summer reading manual.] * We understand the role hunger plays in the lives of low-income families, especially when it comes to learning, so we partner with our local Summer Food Service Program, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, to __________ . * We are doing _______ to get more underserved youth to participate in our summer reading program because we know they are most at risk of summer learning loss. * Last year, our summer reading evaluation indicated that _____% of the youth maintained or improved their reading skills as a result of participating in our summer reading program. * If our library had more support for summer reading, we would like to do ______ to increase our impact on summer learning loss in our community. Thank you for all your hard work! Based on the number of implementation tasks and the available training schedule, we have made the decision to delay re-activating the statewide service until Monday, October 3rd. At that time, we expect to have Oregon library staff and volunteers staffing the statewide service in addition to libraries being able to provide local service to their own patrons. While we realize that this is inconvenient for many libraries, we want to do everything possible to implement a successful re-launch of Answerland. Delaying the launch of the new software is the best approach to ensuring we are bringing up a stable, high-quality service staffed by librarians and volunteers who are confident in using the new software to answer our patrons questions. During the statewide service downtime, current Answerland partner libraries are welcome to use the new software to chat with their own patrons. Please send an email to answer.land at state.or.us and include your full contact information (name, library name, contact email and phone number) if you are a current Answerland partner library and would like to activate your local service before October 3rd. In support of the re-launch in October, we will provide promotional and marketing materials to libraries so you can spread the word to your patrons once the service is back. Additional information on how to receive promotional materials will be announced in September. We appreciate your continued patience during this transition and are looking forward to a successful statewide re-launch in October.
