Here is a project related question I just received about Ready to Read that you may be interested in as you are planning your Ready to Read project: Q: I am supposed to do an early literacy presentation for childcare providers. Can I use Ready to Read funds to pay for someone else with more experience to do the presentation and have myself and my staff attend along with the childcare providers to get more training ourselves? A: Yes, you can use Ready to Read funds to contract with someone else to conduct early literacy presentations. Most of the people who conducted the Every Child Ready to Read training for Reading for Healthy Families are interested in doing contract work and are listed online at: http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/youthsvcs/rfhf.overview.contact.shtml#Book_an_ECRR_Trainer. In addition, you can use Ready to Read Grant funds to hire subs to fill in at your library while you and your staff attend the presentation to get more early literacy training for yourselves. Ready to Read applications are due in about 4 weeks. Please mark your calendars accordingly so you can get the application in the mail by August 31st if you haven't done so already. Applications are online at: http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/youthsvcs/aboutready.shtml#Forms. Please let me know if you have any questions. I want to get some posters, wall hangings, etc. to make the kids area more visually attractive and, hopefully, more interesting and exciting place for the kids to come into. On my budget sheet, where do I put the budgeted money for these things? A: Posters, wall-hangings, storytime carpet and other environmental pieces that are not equipment nor library materials should go in "other". If you aren't certain which budget category to put an item in A) ask me, or B) put it in the "Other" category. Here is a sample budget based on the project described in the question: EARLY LITERACY PROJECT BUDGET (Don?t fill out this section if you are only doing a summer reading project.) I just received another great question about the ready to read application that I thought you all might be interested in knowing too. Q: I have a question on page 5, question 5. It says "total" amount of people attending. Does that mean average on a given program day, or total for the whole SRP? In the first case it would be for us about 25 people attending per program. In the second case it would be 100 total people attending our 4 programs over the summer. A: The total for the whole SRP is "total" amount of people attending so you would write in 100 total people attending. Explanation of why the State Library does it this way: We report how many people attend Ready to Read funded programs to the Oregon Legislature. I add up all the numbers you provide in #5 to get the total amount of people attending programs Oregon libraries are funding with Ready to Read funds. If you say how many people come per program, I cannot use that number because I don't know how many programs you are presenting. Please let me know if you have any more questions. It means total for the whole SRP. It does not mean average attendance on a given day. So you would list the higher number for that. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "100/50". Do you mean that if you have low turn-out, you estimate about 50 total people attending all summer reading programs and if you have high turn-out you estimate about 100 people total attending? If so, I recommend you estimate something in the middle like 75 total amount of people attending. Please just put one number on the application, not a range. Let me know if you have any other questions. Message-ID: <640435851FD7CB4AB3C4BE0D1963BA241BAF50D2@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> Hello! I received another excellent question about the Ready to Read Grant application. Remember, applications must be postmarked by tomorrow--August 31, 2011. Late applications will not be accepted. This is in accordance with Oregon Administrative Rule 543-040-0030 (2) which means exceptions cannot be made. Q: This is the first year we?ve had separate budgets for early literacy and summer reading. We estimated costs for the purposes of the application since we have never tracked, for example, library materials to support early literacy separate from library materials to support summer reading. If we find that our estimates are off and we end up spending slightly less on one and more on the other, will that be a big deal? A: It is not a big deal. Here is what you do: * If you are not changing your project, but you end up spending more on one item and less on another item included in your Ready to Read Grant application all you have to do is report that change in December 2012 when you write and submit your 2011-2011 Ready to Read final report. * If you want to change your project and spend money on something that was not included in your Ready to Read Grant application you need to call or email me to get approval. I just need to confirm that the new part of your project is an acceptable use of grant moneys according to Oregon Revised Statute 357.750. This is not a big deal either. Please let me know if you have any more questions. You all have been asking particularly good questions this year and I greatly appreciate it!
