I just received another good question about filling out the Ready to Read Grant application-which is due August 31, 2011. Q: I partner with Head Start. I use Ready to Read monies to create the literacy flyers and provide a weekly story time at the Head Start classroom. How do I evaluate the success of my project? A: Here are two ideas: * Your observations of kids engagement in story time over time. (If you're going to the same class weekly for at least 6-8 weeks, you should see growth in the kids' ability to sit still, listen, participate in song/rhymes, and answer questions about the story when comparing your first story time with a class to the last story time with that same class.) * Feedback from the Head Start teachers. (This can be as informal or formal as you want it. Informal: just call/email the teacher to give them a heads up that the next time you come in you want to talk with them for 5-10 minutes to get their feedback on how story times are going. Formal: create a short survey for them to fill out to get more structured feedback. Things that would be good to know: Have they seen an improvement in the kids around books and reading as a result of your story times? Have parents provided any feedback on the literacy flyers or the story times? Have the teachers changed how they do their own story times or book sharing based on observing your story times?) Ready to Read applications are online at: http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/youthsvcs/aboutready.shtml#Forms. Please let me know if you have any questions.
