Some of you contacted me for more guidance around developing outcomes and how to measure them. As luck would have it, earlier today Marilyn from Douglas County Library emailed a perfect example for measuring (documenting) outcomes. In her email she wrote: BTW, a mother told me yesterday that I was "largely responsible for turning her son into a monster reader". She brought Dusty to our Baby Lapsit program and then they were regulars at Storytime. Dusty is 8 now and in the summer reading program. She said he has read 86 hours this summer. This is exactly the type of anecdote that you should write down and save for reporting outcomes. Libraries won't being doing a pre and post test to measure kids' reading skills so this type of anecdote from an informal conversation with a patron is golden for documenting how your library is achieving outcomes-i.e. helping kids get ready for kindergarten, maintaining their reading skills over the summer, and becoming life-long learners! You may want to write down and save in a file as many of these anecdotes as is realistic and possible for your work situation. This type of anecdote is great for sharing with your board/council and key stakeholders, and for folding into reports to make a bigger impact. There have been some issues with the state's website so I have attached the application in word and pdf and a copy of the sample to this email. Please let me know if you have difficulties accessing the application ASAP. Many of you have called or emailed me to get assistance writing outcomes-thank you! Here is how I like to craft outcomes: Start your outcome sentences with: * Children and teens will... * Parents and primary caregivers will... * Childcare providers will... * Patrons will... End your outcome sentence with what they will learn or how they will change. * Maintain or increase their reading skills * Learn songs and rhymes at storytime and use them at home with their children * Integrate early literacy activities into their daily routines with children * Will increase their awareness of library resources, services, and programs Measuring outcomes in libraries is tricky and we will likely have to do some trial and error before we figure out what works. It is likely that one strategy for measuring outcomes will not work for all libraries-that's okay! Here are some ideas: * Survey parents and kids after the summer reading program * Do one storytime survey each year * Use your powers of observation-you can usually tell when a few or a lot of families are practicing songs and rhymes at home because either lots of kids can sing along at the next storytime or you have to re-teach the song. Many of you also notice families who accesses other library resources and services before/after a program and those that dash out. You probably notice which families you see using the library between programs and those who only use the library the day of the program. Your observations don't have to be quantified, but take a few notes throughout the year about what you are observing. If kids never seem to learn the songs, why? What can you do to change that? Perhaps distributing a handout with the songs and rhymes? If program attendees never access other library resources, what can you do to change that? Promo other upcoming events at the end of storytime or a summer reading program. Do you see storytime parents at the adult book club? * Track statistics in new/different ways. Is there an increase in adult circulation during the summer--i.e. are parents checking out books when they take their kids to SRP? How much higher is circulation on program days than other days? Are song/rhyme books and CDs circulating more because of your emphasis on them in storytimes? Is attendance at programs you cross-promote increasing? Hopefully this will help you! This is important information because the Ready to Read Grant is part of the new Early Learning Council.
