A lot of you are requesting estimates for 2014-2015 R2R Grants for library budgeting purposes. Please use the amount of money you received this year for your 2014-2015 library budget. You can always find how much your library actually received on the Ready to Read Grant website: http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/youthsvcs/aboutready.aspx#Project_Descriptions. Below is one short article I copied and pasted directly from the newsletter with a few library-specific takeaways. You may read the full newsletter below or online. Need ideas for families on how they can keep their high school student learning all summer, while helping them find a job and getting them thinking about college? Check out just a few of these great tips from NSLA CEO Sarah Pitcock on the U.S. Department of Education's HomeRoom blog: * Have your teen identify a career of interest, and research it together online or at your local library. * Seek opportunities for him or her to connect with a professional mentor, either online or in your community. * Encourage them to volunteer. Volunteer positions can provide valuable experience in job skills such as planning, communication, and collaboration. * Plan a summer vacation, and ask your teen to take an active role in the planning. Research and budgeting are valuable skills. Need more ideas? Visit our Summer Learning Day website on ways you can celebrate and spread awareness on Friday, June 20. Tweet your ideas for teens this summer using #SummerSuccess! My takeaways: * The first point explicitly recommends teens research careers at their public library. Are you prepared to help? When was the last time you familiarized with LearningExpress Library's Career Center? * The third point encourages teens to volunteer. Most of your libraries have plenty of volunteer opportunities. How are you promoting volunteer opportunities to teens? Are you working with teen volunteers in a way that will help them develop good work ethics-showing up on time, not using their smart phone during work time (unless it's required for the work), dressing appropriately, communicating with supervisors and other staff/volunteers effectively? * If/when the proposed changes to the Ready to Read Grant go into effect (2015-2016), these will be summer reading and/or school-age projects public libraries could support with grant funds! Attached is a blank copy of the statistics and ordering survey so you know what all the questions are in advance. You may want to print this and fill it out as you go along so you have all the information at your finger tips when you complete the online survey this fall. The link to the survey will be emailed out in September on this listserv to ensure that library directors are kept informed and that only one person fills out the survey per library. The result of the 2014 summer reading statistics and ordering survey will be compiled into the 5th Annual Summer Reading Brief. Please keep in mind that Oregon libraries are at liberty to implement the summer reading program in whatever way works best for their communities therefore libraries may not track all of these statistics-that's okay, you don't have to report on anything you don't do. Please let me know if you have any questions. We conduct this survey annually and are sending it to a wide range of customers: academic, public, and tribal library directors; the OLA Executive Board; the OASL Board; the Intellectual Freedom Committee; the OYAN Executive Board; the LSTA Council; the Statewide Database Licensing Advisory Committees; youth services librarians; and LSTA grantees. We are sending this announcement to several e-mail lists so you may receive more than one invitation to participate. Please respond to the survey just once if you receive multiple invitations. The deadline for completion of the survey is Wednesday, June 18th. Thanks for your assistance with this project. As we have in the past, we will use the responses to help shape our priorities and projects.
