From katie.anderson at state.or.us Wed May 6 10:46:58 2015 From: katie.anderson at state.or.us (Katie Anderson) Date: Wed, 6 May 2015 17:46:58 +0000 Subject: [R2R-OR] Observation tools--draft for you to try out this year Message-ID: <640435851FD7CB4AB3C4BE0D1963BA2452A90F29@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> Hi Ready to Read Grantees, For those of you doing observations to evaluate your 2015 Ready to Read Grant, attached is the first draft observation tools for you to try out. Please email suggestions for improvements to me at anytime. Remember, I'm creating an evaluation toolkit for the 2016 Reading for Success/Ready to Read Grant. It will include observation tools, survey tools, and interview tools. The first and second draft of the survey tools have already been sent out for you to try. I hope to send you the first draft of the interview tools next month. My goal is to have the evaluation toolkit finalized and online by January 1, 2016 when you start your next grant-funded projects. Please note that the evaluation toolkit includes tips, templates, and ideas for you to use to create your own evaluation. While some of the templates from the survey tools can be printed and used exactly as they are, in most cases you will need to edit the templates so they evaluate the specific changes you want to see children and families make as a result of participating in your grant-funded activities. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Katie PS: I will send this out on the kids-lib and OYAN listservs as well. We are sending this announcement to several e-mail lists so you may get more than one invitation to participate. Please respond to the survey just once if you receive multiple invitations. The deadline for completion of the survey is May 29th. Thanks for your assistance with this project. As we have in the past, we will use the responses to help shape our priorities and projects. To address those concerns, in December the State Library will send an email on the Ready to Read listserv stating that electronic deposits have been made and checks are in the mail. All libraries will receive the same hardcopy packet of grant management information in the mail, but libraries that wish to continue receiving a check will also receive their check and libraries that opt in to electronic deposit will receive a bright-colored memo reminding them their grant funds have been deposited electronically. All libraries must reply to ferol.weyand at state.or.us by Friday, May 15th to let me know: * Yes, LIBRARY NAME wants to sign-up for direct deposit. * No, LIBRARY NAME does not want direct deposit. If you do not want direct deposit, I'll reply to let you know you're on the list of libraries receiving a check in the mail. If you want direct deposit, I'll reply and provide you with the form and instructions you need to sign-up for direct deposit. You will be added to the list of libraries receiving direct deposit. Please let me know if you have any questions. We conduct this survey annually and are sending it to a wide-range of customers: academic, public, and tribal library directors; the OLA Executive Board; the OASL Board; the Intellectual Freedom Committee; the OYAN Executive Board; the LSTA Council; the Statewide Database Advisory Committees; youth services librarians; LSTA grantees; and Plinkit library staff. Message-ID: <640435851FD7CB4AB3C4BE0D1963BA2452AAB7D5@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> Hi! I was just asked a great question which I think all of you may want to know the answer to. Q: We want to make the following three changes to our 2015 Ready to Read Grant. Are these just shifting funds among items in the budget on our application which we can do without requesting approval to change our grant or are they changes that need your approval? 1) With approx. $400 leftover in our contacted program budget for SRP, I'd like to shift this and use to purchase supplies for passive activities to be used at all 11 of our branches throughout the summer. 2) SRP Prize incentives - We had budgeted for this. Instead of a lot of small cheap prizes, we'd like to purchase 2 Kindles for each branch as a grand prize in 2 age categories. 3) Staffing - Should we not be able to use all our SRP staffing budget this summer, would we be able to divert that to use for EL programming in the Fall? And if so, could that be used for in-house storytimes? Currently our early literacy grant-funded activities are related to outreach programs, not in-house storytime. A: The first two things are just shifting funds among the budgeted items already in your grant application-you are still using the grant to fund SRP incentives and SRP programs, you're just changing the type of incentives and type of programs which is okay to do at any time without letting me know or getting approval for the change. The third thing is a real change to grant-funded activities because you are adding in-house early literacy programs which weren't included in the grant application. You need to request and receive from me for this change before implementing it. Please let me know if you have any other questions about the Ready to Read Grant.
