Books for Babies Kit grant opportunity: http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/altaff/outreach/booksforbabies/matchinggrants.cfm Kit contents: http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/altaff/outreach/booksforbabies/kitcontents.cfm In partnership with Nordstrom, ALTAFF will be granting 20 grants for $500 each to match $1,000 raised by selected Friends groups, women's groups, libraries, and other non-profit organizations for purchasing Books for Babies kits from ALTAFF. Grant recipients do not need to be members of ALTAFF. Here's how it works. Applicants agree to order a minimum of $1,500 worth of Books for Babies kits, of which ALTAFF will pay $500. Therefore, the minimum commitment from applicants is $1,000. Grants will be awarded in two cycles: Cycle 2: Applications are due October 1, 2009. Recipients will be notified by October 15, and kits must be ordered by December 1, 2009. Applicants not awarded grants in the first cycle may amend their applications and be reconsidered for the second grant cycle. Only one grant per organization. Grants will be awarded to organizations that currently have a Books for Babies program in place as well as organizations starting a new Books for Babies program. Grant applications will be considered based on the following criteria: Effective kit distribution plan. Effective use of the kits to connect new parents with their local library. Involvement of the local library. Effective publicity plan for their Books for Babies program. I have attached a blank log to this email for you to use, or you can get it online at: http://tiny.cc/w758C. If you have any questions please email (katie.anderson at state.or.us) or call me (503-378-2528). You all still have several months to meet your commitment of providing early literacy education to 15 families, but RFHF is in the midst of evaluating Year One so we really need you to submit library logs tracking the families you have served up to this point. If you've served only one family, please complete and submit a library log so we can include that information in our evaluation. Many of you have been submitting logs monthly, those of you who have done this do not need to re-send past logs. Please send me what you have done so far this month. Again, if you have any questions please email (katie.anderson at state.or.us) or call me (503-378-2528). Renea ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Multnomah County Library launches multilingual video series. In response to Multnomah County's growing linguistic diversity, Multnomah County Library has created Welcome to the Library, an online video series in Chinese, Russian and Vietnamese that introduces speakers of these languages to the many services offered by the public library. DVD sets of the Welcome to the Library series are being provided to all public library systems in Oregon for use in their own outreach work. Viewable from the library's website , the Chinese , Russian and Vietnamese versions of Welcome to the Library parallel each other in content, with eight chapters that focus on useful information such as how to get a library card and how to use a library computer. All three are also cataloged as DVDs that can be checked out from the library, and are posted on YouTube Featuring the library's bilingual staff and community volunteers, Welcome to the Library is the latest effort of the library's Target Language Initiative , which provides culturally effective library services and information to speakers of the four most frequently used languages in Multnomah County (after English). Creation of the Welcome to the Library series was supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Oregon State Library. RFHF is starting to plan for next year. From your feedback we learned that we need to make some changes among the books you giveaway to the 15 families. You recommend that we provide more books for children 0-3 years old, more Spanish language/culture books, and touch-and-feel or lift-the-flap books. I would love to hear what books you recommend we purchase for the giveaway books next year. Also, if there are any books you gave away this year that you think would be a big hit next year let us know so we purchase them again! If you would like to recommend giveaway books please email me the title, author, and a link to where it can be purchased online (like amazon.com). Also, books must be $7 or less. Please send me your recommendations by Monday, June 8th. For example: Este No Es Mi Gatito/That's Not My Kitten by Fiona Watt at http://www.amazon.com/Este-Gatito-Thats-Not-Kitten/dp/0746045131/ref=pd_sim_b_10 Thank you, Katie Katie Anderson, Library Development Services * Youth Services Consultant * Oregon Center for the Book Coordinator * Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, OR 97301 katie.anderson at state.or.us, 503-378-2528 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <5381AE97-5304-405C-9499-ED2A5C174501@oslmac.osl.state.or.us> Hello! The Special Topics presentations are now on the RFHF website at http://oregon.gov/OSL/LD/youthsvcs/rfhf.special.topics.shtml. Here you will find the PowerPoint presentations, handouts, book recommendations, and links to other websites for more information on that topic. Under "Working with Parents" you will also find the list of ideas to try to make a connection with parents that you developed in your cohort. As most of you know, I've been having a difficult time posting PowerPoints onto the website. I found a temporary work-around so that they are now available, but they have been converted to pdf files. When you click on the presentation to view it, it will appear sideways. To view it correctly you will need to either print it out (it will print correctly) or save it to your computer. When you open the saved copy on your computer you can go to "View" on the top toolbar, go to "Rotate View", and then select "Clockwise". Thank you for your patience with this!
