You will find brief annotations for over 300 books that have all been recommended in the children's literature journal Bulletin. The Guide Book includes titles for children and teens 1-18years old published in 2007-2009. This may be a useful tool for collection development and selecting giveaway books. And, it may be useful for helping parents, relatives, and friends select books to give as holiday gifts to the children and teens in their lives. I know that all of you work very hard to get as many books into the hands of children as you can. Here is an opportunity to help children get books in a different way than through your program or library. First Book Portland, a non-profit organization that gives away new books to low-income children, is at risk of closing because they are having a difficult time finding new board members. If you are interested in supporting First Book Portland by becoming a member of their board please read the following email to learn more. There will be an informational meeting for those who are interested on Thursday, November 19 at 7:30 at Cafe Pallino (3003 SE Division St. 97202) If you have any questions please email portland_or at firstbook.org. Thank you, Katie Katie Anderson, Library Development Services * Youth Services Consultant * Oregon Center for the Book Coordinator * Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, OR 97301 katie.anderson at state.or.us, 503-378-2528 From: libs-or-bounces at listsmart.osl.state.or.us [mailto:libs-or-bounces at listsmart.osl.state.or.us] On Behalf Of Eva Calcagno Sent: Friday, November 06, 2009 10:55 AM To: libs-or at listsmart.osl.state.or.us;Emporia List Subject: [Libs-Or] First Book Portland looking for new Board members Good morning library folks and people who support early literacy! I'm sending this on behalf of First Book Portland, a non-profit Board on which I serve. Unless we get some new board members, we have decided to retire First Book Portland at the beginning of next year (after we do a final grant cycle). To that end, we are doing a big push to get new blood on the board. Are you interested in an opportunity to put books in the hands of low-income children? While I've been on the board, we've increased the number of grants that have been given to local organizations. While we've done a good job, the need is just so huge! But then, you all know that. If you are interested, please let me know. Also, please forward this blurb to any people (or listservs that may have people) who might be interested in joining FB and helping it grow it over the next few years. Thank you for your help! Eva Calcagno ----------------------------- Join the First Book Board! First Book (www.firstbook.org) is a national non-profit organization that gives new books to children from low-income families so that the children can start their own home libraries. The Portland Advisory Board has been active in the tri-counties since 1998, and has granted a total of 40,210 new books to existing literacy organizations such as LifeWorks NW and the Oregon Child Development Coalition. Our Board is comprised of volunteers from non-profit agencies, businesses, libraries, and the community. We are currently recruiting new Board members, including a Chairperson, to lead the organization into 2010. The primary duties of the board are to conduct fundraising campaigns, identify potential recipient groups, and award book grants every year, with a time commitment of 5-10 hours/month. If you are interested, please visit www.firstbook.org/portlandor or email portland_or at firstbook.org. We will hold an Informational Meeting on Thursday, November 19 at 7:30 at Cafe Pallino (3003 SE Division St., 97202). At that meeting, we can answer questions and tell you more about First Book. We hope to see you there! A blank log is attached, or you can download and save the "Recording Log" to your computer from: http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/youthsvcs/rfhf.recording.log.shtml#Recording_Log. Please email your completed log to me at katie.anderson at state.or.us. You can also print your completed log and fax it to 503-378-6439 or mail it to me at 250 Winter St. NE, Salem OR 97301. NOTE: The "Six Skills Overview" workshop is not on the drop-down menu under "Main Education Session Emphasized". If you presented this session, please select "Print Motivation" instead. Remember, you may not count childcare providers, preschool teachers, or other early childhood professionals because NPC Research and our funders are evaluating parent education specifically. However, we hope you won't exclude them from your early literacy education sessions. If you present sessions to early childhood professionals, please include these numbers in the body of your email when you send your completed recording log--it will be excellent addition data to support the program and demonstrate libraries commitment to early literacy. Thanks to all of you who have already submitted your recording logs!
