The Opportunity:

Sometimes you leave your cape at home.

You are more than just a youth librarian. You are a literacy superhero, a
reference champion, a guardian of knowledge. You amaze children and adults
alike with your customer service superpowers. Faster than a speeding
locomotive, you fly through the branch, effortlessly delivering Spanish
story time to toddlers, composing a book list of Tomás Rivera Mexican
American Children’s Book Award winners for our website, and connecting a
young reader with his Summer Reading game board. You're able to leap a
stack of books in a single bound and lift a crate of books with ease. You
dazzle us all with your excellent interpersonal, organizational, leadership
and communication skills.

Cape or not, we want you on our side!

Multnomah County Library is looking for creative, charismatic Bilingual
Spanish Youth Librarians to join our team!

Our current opportunities are available at our Gresham
<https://multcolib.org/library-location/gresham> and Kenton
<https://multcolib.org/library-location/kenton> locations, but we hope to
use the hiring list generated by this recruitment to fill other youth
librarian positions throughout the system should they become available in
the future.

As a Bilingual Spanish Youth Librarian, you provide outstanding customer
and informational service to a diverse spectrum of customers of all ages
and backgrounds. You model customer service with youth, families, and
caregivers that is culturally respectful and developmentally appropriate,
and work to overcome systems of oppression, discrimination, exclusion, and
ethnocentrism. In particular, you draw on your expertise in literature,
research and other areas when providing excellent customer and
informational service to youth, teens, families, educators, and care
providers as well as the Spanish speaking community as a whole. You respond
to information requests that are in person, over the phone, through email,
via chat, social media or other virtual media in both English and Spanish
in order to answer questions, locate information, provide social services,
and train the public in using the library's and other agency resources, all
while prioritizing accessibility for both in person and virtual services.

In this role, you equitably assess the needs of the community and plan,
prepare and implement multigenerational programs (including storytimes,
training, educational workshops, etc.) accordingly. You design, promote,
present, and evaluate a variety of diverse programs for youth, with
consideration of equity, diversity, and inclusion; principles of child
development; and the needs, interests, and goals of all youth, their
caregivers, and educators in the community. You deliver programs outside or
inside the library, both in person and virtually and in English and
Spanish, to meet users where they are, addressing community and educational
needs, including those of unserved and underserved populations. Programs
are responsive to community needs and evolve over time to meet those needs.

Bilingual Spanish Youth Librarians serve their assigned library location
but also support the designated library region as a whole, providing
services to the communities served within that region. You work closely
with your regional staff colleagues and serve as a liaison between the
local branch, regional, and systemwide Youth Services and cultural teams.
You collaborates with Youth Services, our cultural teams, and other
workgroups as needed to develop or revise programs, services, and
publications. You take an active role leading staff in developing and
implementing equity, diversity and inclusion work, especially as it relates
to our cultural staff and community needs.

The library is open and welcoming to all members of our community,
including individuals who may be encountering hardships or challenges that
affect their behavior and interactions. As a member of our team, you should
possess the ability to work respectfully and capably with people from all
backgrounds and age groups. You must demonstrate a positive attitude,
excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor
while working with customers, co-workers and community. In providing
customer service, you may encounter situations that require de-escalation
or assistance from a supervisor or person-in- charge. You may act as
Person-in-Charge in the absence of a manager or supervisor. Your ability to
exercise quick and mature judgment in dealing with potentially disruptive,
physically dangerous or abusive customers and emergencies is crucial.
