Hola reformistas,

I want to share this job again, and provide some honest insider info.

Cons:

  *
It's part-time. I think there are too many part-time jobs in libraries that are the choice of the employer, not the employee, and too many of those are jobs where we are actively recruiting latines and bipoc folks.
  *
I don't think it pays as much as it should.
  *
Part-timers have to pay about $200 a month for healthcare.

Pros:

  *
This is a vacancy created when we finally promoted one of our amazing latine coworkers to a full-time position.
  *
The organization is listening to our concerns about PT positions, and our desire for advancement opportunities, especially for BIPOC, bilingual and latine folks.
  *
We have a strong union that is fighting for better pay!
  *
The union also wants to lower PT costs for health insurance, and make sure everyone who wants to work FT gets the opportunity, (but it could take years to reach those goals.)
  *
Our health insurance is really good.
  *
There is a 4% incentive for bilingual staff.
  *
This is the team I work on, and it's a really awesome team. I legitimately love coming to work every day.
  *
We have the highest concentration of latines of all the teams at BCL.
  *
Our team are leaders in anti-racist work at the library and in the City of Beaverton.

More information about the bilingual pay differential:

  *
It takes about a month to kick in.
  *
You will take an oral test through a company (either Language Line Solutions or Language Testing International) over the phone to qualify. It's on work time.
  *
The 4% is on all hours you work, whether or not you use Spanish.
  *
It counts as part of your salary for the purposes of the PERS pension (the pension system for Oregon public employees.) So it's not like a bonus, you actually count as being paid 4% more when you retire.

Okay, here is the job! Please let me know if you have any questions.

I’m excited to share that Beaverton City Library is hiring a part-time (20 hr/week) Bilingual (Spanish/English) Reference Assistant. If you…

  * Love working with people of all ages and want to introduce them to everything the library has to offer
  * Are excited about offering Hora de cuentos, our Spanish storytime
  * Like working with statistics and data

…then we want to hear from you!

Our Reference Assistants spend most of their work week helping patrons at our reference desks. This position also supports the library’s early literacy initiatives (specifically for our Spanish-speaking families) and our Collections team.
