RE:      2% Assessment Q & A

This message relates to the new federal regulations allowing another
assessment under NCLB -- called the 2% flexibility option.

 

Question: What is Oregon's response to the new federal regulations
allowing the inclusion of an assessment that is judged against modified
achievement standards (the 2% assessment) as this is a critical issue
for districts?  

 

Answer: As the issues impacted by these regulations are extremely
complicated, Oregon's solution will need a thorough and comprehensive
strategy as a base.  Given the scope of the regulations, Oregon will not
have a specific 2% assessment in 2006-2007 or in 2007-2008.  As in
previous years students with IEPs will continue to take either the
General grade-level assessment or the Extended Assessment as determined
appropriate by their IEP team.  ODE is currently engaging in a series of
internal discussions and will convene a task-force dedicated to pursuing
this new provision and the associated timelines. Information on progress
of this planning will be disseminated to you at regular intervals.
