RE: Idea Enhancement Grants for Professional Development

A notification about an enhancement grant will be reaching you soon. This grant is specified for activities related directly to special education professional development efforts. These enhancement grants come from ODE discretionary IDEA funds. Over the past few years, we have determined that part of ODE's federal allocation, which does not get distributed through formula, should be shared with you to direct the activities you need to accomplish.

1. Please understand that this is in addition to your IDEA formal flow through allocation and should not be confused with that allocation.

2. The allocations are the same as last year, plus a 2% increase.

3. You recently received funds for extended assessment efforts earlier so these funds are in addition to that allocation.

4. You also received funds for SPR&I which are in addition to this allocation.

5. This enhancement grant, similar to last year, may be used for such things as: a) RTI efforts, b) PBS efforts, c) expanded SPR&I activities and improvement planning, d) determination issues, e) other trainings specifically related to support for students with disabilities, and f) other activities that enhance the understanding of and process for special education.

The funds from this grant may not be used to purchase equipment, or to pay for existing staff payroll or benefit costs. Substitute costs which enable select staff to attend trainings are allowable expenses on this grant.

Please consider a plan for spending these valuable funds in a timely manner. Waiting until the last minute does not benefit students or staff in their efforts to enhance instruction or support. The last day to encumber these funds will be September 30, 2010.

You may direct any questions related to these funds to Eric Richards at eric.richards at state.or.us<mailto:eric.richards at state.or.us> or 503-947-5786.
