2.     Health Literacy and Effective Organizational Communication - April 16 from 12-1:30; Portland or via webinar
The Oregon Office of Equity and Inclusion is hosting this lunch and learn presentation that will address health literacy as a barrier to optimal health care and health outcomes, ways to communicate effectively across literacy levels, languages, cultures; technical issues related to the different methods of communicating health information (e.g. print, website, smart phone, etc.), and organizational strategies for promoting effective communication and health equity. 3.     Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance Instructor Training - April 17-18 in Salem

Sponsored by the Oregon Public Health Division, this free 2-day training is for Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance, an evidence-based balance training regimen designed for older adults and people with balance disorders. The program is intended for community-dwelling older adults aged 60 and older, who can walk easily with or without assistive devices. Participants should practice the program at least twice a week for 12 weeks, in a class taught by an authorized instructor. 4.     Health Literacy Training - April 29 in Grants Pass, April 30 in Medford

5.     Oregon's White House Conference on Aging - May 20, Lebanon

6.     Study of Home-Delivered Meals - Impact of Daily Delivery vs Weekly Delivery vs. Wait-listed Seniors
Meals on Wheels America conducted a pilot research study of the impact of meal service delivery - finding that for seniors who received daily-delivered meals had greater improvements in health and quality of life, and felt safer and less lonely, than those who received frozen weekly-delivered meals. [Note: This study focused on home-delivered meals, which provide a critical service for people who cannot access community-based meals. However, research - including this  recent study<http://www.investigage.com/2015/03/09/closer-look-social-activities-greatest-cognitive-benefit/> - also continues to emphasize the benefits of group connections such as community (or congregate) meals for older adults who are still able to participate in community activity.]



7.     Older Americans Month 2015 Materials Available

The Administration for Community Living has developed materials<http://www.acl.gov/NewsRoom/Observances/oam/2015/Index.aspx> to support communities celebrating Older Americans Month this May. The 2015 observance theme, "Get into the Act," honors the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act and emphasizes older adults taking charge of their health and getting engaged in their communities. Materials include a poster series, sample social media, and event ideas.



8.     End of Life Discussion Videos from National Institutes of Health

Five new videos about end-of-life care issues from NIHSeniorHealth.gov can help older adults and their families learn what to expect during the final stage of life so they can plan ahead.

9.     Emergency Self-Preparedness Training for People with Disabilities

The City of Portland has developed a video<https://www.portlandoregon.gov/oni/66305>, available in multiple versions and languages, to help people with disabilities and their families prepare for emergencies. The video is entertaining and covers a variety of emergency situations and preparations.
