Hi there -
In an effort to expand the availability of the Walk with Ease program into more communities statewide, OHA Public Health is working with OSU Extension to enable AAAs to get staff or volunteers (including any staff or volunteers of partner organizations that you work directly with) through the online Walk With Ease instructor training in June. The online training usually costs $89 to complete, but is available at no cost to interested AAAs for AAAs that respond by May 15.

Walk with Ease (http://extension.oregonstate.edu/fch/walk-with-ease) is a flexible evidence-based walking program designed to be led by a certified instructor, with 1-hour sessions meeting twice a week for 9 weeks, or 3 times per week for 6 weeks. Each session includes a brief health-related discussion and a self-paced group walk. There is no minimum number of participants, and programs can be offered indoors (e.g., in malls or other areas that allow for walking) or outside. Instructors must have a current CPR certification, and must complete the online Walk with Ease training that typically takes 2 hours (you can start/stop as often as you need to; it doesn't need to be done in one sitting). OSU Extension offers technical assistance and free program materials including participant workbooks and marketing fliers (see "Leader Resources" online: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/fch/walk-with-ease/group-leaders). Organizations schedule and coordinate their own programs, and collect participant data that must be emailed or faxed to OSU Extension. More information about Walk with Ease and support offered through OSU Extension is available here: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/fch/walk-with-ease/group-leaders

If you have individuals who would like to go through the training and are prepared to offer the Walk with Ease program in communities you serve, please let Katie Dunker at OSU Extension know by May 15 by emailing her at walk at oregonstate.edu or phone 541-737-3173. Since Katie is new to our AAA system, please let her know which AAA you're with, and whether the individuals who'll be trained are staff/volunteers of your AAA or of a partner organization. Katie will provide the individuals you identify with a code by June 1, enabling them to complete the online training between June 1 and June 30 at no cost, and will also follow up with them to offer support and materials once they're trained.

We hope this training is helpful to you - and thanks for considering this option in the programs you support! :)
