Hello Oregon Self-Management Network members,
Please see below for an important message from the Self-Management Resource Center (SMRC) regarding changes in their Master Training policy.
SMRC will be holding an informational webinar about these changes on Monday, March 8th from 10 am – 12 pm PT. Registration is required to attend, and it will only be open to the first 100 registrants. However, it will be recorded and made available for those unable to join.
We will also be briefly covering this update at the upcoming quarterly network call on Thursday, March 18th. We hope to see you there!

Subject: [SMRC-admins] MUST READ: Changes in Master Trainings

PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE EMAIL
Now that we’ve all had experience with the new virtual environment, it looks like it’s here to stay. SMRC has been working on how to offer Master training virtually. Our new Master training structure follows, and is also explained in an attached document.
We know you have questions, so we have scheduled a free webinar to help answer those questions. Scroll to the end of this email to see how to register, and the registration instructions are also attached. The webinar is limited to 100 participants, but we will record and post it on our website for those who miss it.
Keep reading for details.
New Master Training Policy:
SMRC will start virtual Master training at the end of April. It is one 3-hour session once a week for 3 weeks. To attend this training, one must be an active Leader who has offered at least two workshops, one of which must be virtual. At least one of these workshops must have occurred in the past year. Their initial leader training could have been online or in person and facilitated by any active Master Trainer for any licensed organization. We expect that most of the Leader training will remain at the local level. However, if there is a demand, SMRC will continue to offer virtual Leader training.
For the foreseeable future SMRC will offer all virtual Master training. This can be offered in two ways:

  1. Any licensed organization who wishes can have leaders take the training through SMRC, much like had been done in the past with our trainings in Palo Alto.
  2. An organization can contract with SMRC to offer a closed Master training (a training for only that organization).
At this point, we are not sure if post-COVID we (SMRC) will go back to in-person Master trainings or do only virtual Master trainings. This will be decided when we and you have some experience with the virtual format.
Why the Changes?

  * Even before COVID approximately half of all people who attended Master trainings never became certified. That is, they never facilitated the required workshops, or they never conducted a Leader training. Some Master Trainers do not conduct workshops and Leader trainings often enough to maintain certification. This is not enough experience for them to keep a good skill set. In addition, training Master Trainers who never do anything is not cost-effective and results in a significant loss of resources. This new system will help ensure that most Master Trainers will have facilitated and thoroughly understand the SMRC programs before attending Master training. It is hoped that this will also mean that fewer Master Trainers will be lost and fewer will need to be trained.
  * Virtual Master training will be much shorter (9 hours as opposed to 27 hours).
  * Virtual Master training as conducted by SMRC will be less expensive. The training will cost about 800-1,000 dollars per person, as opposed to 1,800 dollars, and there will be no travel or per diem expenses.
  * It is also our hope that having Master training centralized, will make for a more consistent training experience, and thus will also result in more consistency of Leader training. Ultimately, our purpose is to give the best experience possible to our participants.
What about existing T-Trainers?
SMRC will ask existing active T-Trainers to help us train. SMRC staff cannot do all this ourselves. Depending on the demand, we will probably be able to use many of our T-Trainers. Yes, you will get paid — we are not asking for volunteers! We will send a separate announcement to all active T-Trainers to see who might be interested. To help us train virtually, though, T-Trainers will need to have been updated in the 2020 CDSMP and have taken our virtual certification webinar.
