 Howdy!

This recent Independence Day I got to musing about what an interesting
holiday July 4 is. Not only does it encourage us to think about the
founding of our nation and the need to be self-sustaining and, well,
independent, it also leads me to think about how all our independent
organizations are interconnected. On the surface, that's a rather odd
situation.

NRTRC is made up of 43 members networks. Each is an individual,
independent organization. Fiercely independent, some might say. But at
the same time, we're interdependent, as well. A few examples might help
clarify (or muddify) my thought process.

When Dr. Miles Ellenby first began providing care via telemedicine, he was
excited at the prospect of caring for children throughout the state without
always having to transport them to Doernbecher Children's Hospital at
Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU) where he is an Associate
Professor of Pediatric Critical Care. He soon learned that one of the
biggest barriers to delivering telehealth services around the state was
that of credentialing his team. He discovered that each site required
different credentialing documents and that some, like proof of a current TB
test, were not pertinent to providing the services. Because of the
different requirements at different hospitals, the process of credentialing
physicians to practice telemedicine was a huge undertaking even for a very
large institution like OHSU.

A sick child presents in the Emergency Room. He's got pain and needs
immediate attention. But the Critical Access Hospital staff isn't very
experienced in pediatric emergency care. What do they do? Call for help.
And that help comes via Telemedicine.

Rural hospitals in eastern Montana are going through just such a situation
regularly, but, fortunately, the sick child is a training dummy and the
illness is part of a mock emergency practice being provided by Partners in
Health Telemedicine Network (PHTN, a Montana telehealth network that
specializes in pediatric care.

Now is the time to start looking towards next year and the 3rd Annual NRTRC
Telemedicine Conference. After two successful years in Billings, Montana,
we will be moving the conference location to Portland, Oregon for 2014.
The dates for the conference will be March 24-26, 2014, so mark your
calendars now! Portland brings with it great transportation, close
proximity to the Oregon and Washington populations, and many attractions
well worth the visit. We will be exploring the many areas involved in
making a Telemedicine encounter happen, to include the view of patient,
provider, coordinator and technician. Come join us as we explore *Telehealth
Today: A 360o Perspective!*
