In a fitting final plenary at the American Telemedicine Association's 18th
Annual International Meeting & Trade Show, the former chief of medical
affairs for the UnitedHealth Group challenged ATA members to "think about
old problems in new ways" as they sought to make telemedicine the norm in
today's healthcare system.

The time is right for tele-ICU. The need for more intensive-care beds is
acute. The cost of caring for critically ill patients has never been
higher. Intensivists are in short supply, and only getting scarcer as the
population gets older.

Sarah Pletcher, MD, medical director of the year-old Center for Telehealth
at Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, tried for a long
time to get a telemedicine program up and running in her rural region:
hundreds of "moose-intensive miles" dotted by 30 to 40 rural clinics. It
wasn't easy.

More than 120 pieces of legislation were introduced in state legislatures
across the country last year that dealt in some way with telehealth.
