Happy New Year West Coast Data Network! Hope everyone has had a safe and relaxing holiday! I wanted to shoot out a listserv blast to let you know what has been happening with the West Coast Governors Alliance Regional Data Framework ACT and notify you about some upcoming events and opportunities that might be of interest. Please contact Todd Hallenbeck (todd.r.hallenbeck at westcoastoceans.org<mailto:%20todd.r.hallenbeck at westcoastoceans.org>) if you would like to submit information for future updates.

RDF ACT Progress

  * Changing leadership – Matt Armsby, who served alongside Andy Lanier as Co-Chair of the RDF ACT for the past year, is stepping down from the post. Matt played a tremendous role in getting the ACT off the ground and guiding the early grant progress. Many thanks Matt for your service! Steve Steinberg (Southern California Coastal Water Research Project<http://www.sccwrp.org/AboutSCCWRP/SCCWRPStaff/SteinbergSteven.aspx>), will be stepping up as the new co-chair. Welcome Steve!
  * RDF ACT Workplan – The comment period for submission of comments to the ACT regarding its 5 year workplan closed Dec. 15, we received some excellent comments that will be incorporated into the final plan that will be approved and adopted at the RDF ACT Annual meeting in Feb.
  * RDF Annual Meeting – The ACT will be reconvening Feb 7-8 to finalize the work plan, begin formulating contracts for the FY12 grants, and discuss and review development progress of the West Coast Data Registry. The results of that meeting will be available to the Network in late February.
  * Phase I Work – The Data and IT working groups have been meeting over the last several months to review the work of Ecotrust. In the coming weeks both a West Coast Data Prioritization Exercise as well as a Data Registry Design Assessment should be available to the Network. Stay tuned!

Roundtable Updates

NOAA ISO Metadata Training Opportunity
Introduction to Geospatial ISO Metadata, an Online Training Series<http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/seminars/2013/01-jan.html#OneNOAAScienceSeminars_15Jan2013_NCDDC>

With declining budgets and travel limitations, it is challenging for data managers to keep up-to-date on the latest metadata standards and tools. In response, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC) is offering Introduction to Geospatial ISO Metadata, a free, online training series beginning in January 2013.

NCDDC set out to meet the increased needs of data managers as many organizations transition from FGDC to ISO standards. Working with other metadata trainers within the community, the NCDDC Metadata Team has developed a complete package of training materials for the transition to ISO metadata standards. Conducting this training online is an innovative way to meet the increased demand for this training while controlling travel expenses. NCDDC conducted two prior metadata training series online in which over 1500 participants from 18 countries on five continents took part. The success of these efforts has led to the continuation and expansion of the training with two series of Introduction to Geospatial ISO Metadata and two series of Transitioning from FGDC to ISO Metadata already planned for 2013.

Registration is now open for the next series which will be held every Tuesday from 9:30 a.m-10:30 a.m. CST from January 15 until March 5, 2013. The series will start with an introduction to metadata, and cover topics such as XML basics, tools, and data discovery. All materials will be made available online, and instructors will be available by request for special one-on-one "My Metadata" sessions to answer specific questions for individual participants.

FGDC annual Report Released
The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) has released its annual report for fiscal year 2012. NOAA’s efforts are highlighted prominently throughout the document. Examples include NOAA’s contributions to the National Geospatial Platform, leadership in the development of the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard, and the offering of the first series of online ISO training by the NESDIS National Coastal Data Development Center, along with data stewardship for foundational National Spatial Data Infrastructure themes (e.g., geodetic control).
