Hello YSCon Folks,

Thanks to Katie Anderson, we have a new home for the YSCon email list. I'm sending the message below again because I wanted to make sure that it was received during the email list transfer from NC to OR.

A few folks have asked about heading to Louisville. While details are being worked out, this event is definitely happening. Please save the date and make initial travel plans. The more of us who can be there, the better.

I'll keep you posted as I know more.

Cheers,

Hello Everyone!

You may or may not remember a few months ago when Denise Lyons (SC) and I messaged you all about a proposal that YALSA was putting together for an IMLS Leadership grant. Well guess what? It has been funded, and it benefits all state library agency youth services consultants! Basically, YALSA will being bringing us all together to talk (face to face!!!) and learn about continuing education and teen services.

You can read the full press release below or here: http://www.ala.org/yalsa/national-forum-transforming-teen-services-through-continuing-education

MOST IMPORTANTLY....As a part of this grant, YALSA will host a 1.5 day national forum immediately following the 2017 YA Services Symposium<http://www.ala.org/yalsa/yasymposium> in Louisville, KY. One representative from each state library agency will be invited to attend and participate. Representatives will be nominated by their state library agency's chief officer. If you are interested in attending, please let your chief officer know. The national forum is scheduled for Nov. 6 - 7, 2017 (all day the 6th, half day the 7th). Virtual participation opportunities will be available and open to everyone between Jan. and April 2018.

National Forum on Transforming Teen Services Through Continuing Education

YALSA in partnership with the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies<http://www.cosla.org/> (COSLA) is hosting a year-long National Forum on Transforming Teen Services Through Continuing Education from June 1, 2017 through May 31, 2018. This effort brings together state library agency (SLA) youth consultants with thought leaders in libraries, youth development, afterschool programming, professional development, and more. The Forum will leverage both in-person and virtual discussions, and will lead to the publication of a report outlining priorities in continuing education in teen services in public libraries. This project is supported by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services<https://www.imls.gov/> (IMLS). Read the grant proposal<http://www.ala.org/yalsa/sites/ala.org.yalsa/files/content/Narrative_4.pdf> (.pdf).

Recent reports such as the Aspen Institute's "Rising to the Challenge: Re-Envisioning Public Libraries,"<http://csreports.aspeninstitute.org/dialogue-on-public-libraries/2014/report> and YALSA's IMLS-funded "The Future of Library Services for and with Teens: A Call to Action"<http://www.ala.org/yaforum/future-library-services-and-teens-project-report> outline a new vision for public libraries and teen services that can only be achieved by building the knowledge and skills of library staff. While some schools of library and information science are looking at how to re-imagine their curricula for pre-service library staff, it is also essential that at the same time there is a united effort to develop strategic directions for cultivating the skills of those already working in the field. SLA staff play a critical leadership role in the development and delivery of library-related continuing education (CE) to front line library staff. By gathering together a youth services representative from each of the 50 SLAs and other key stakeholders to inform the development of a report that sets a national agenda on continuing education for teen services, YALSA and COSLA will achieve the first step toward developing a coordinated, efficient, and effective process for transforming teen services throughout the U.S., so that teen programs and services enhance civic and cultural engagement, facilitate lifelong learning, promote digital inclusion, and support economic vitality.
